100% CPU usage issue

#1 Post by LacquerHead » Wed Mar 12, 2008 8:47 am

Hi I have a T60 2007 series. My pc all of a sudden started staying at 100%CPU usage, any idea where to look for the problem or how to solve it. It has basically slowed down to a crawl.

I would start by checking to see which process is taking up your CPU. To do this:
- press alt-ctrl-delete
- Click on Processes tab
- Click on CPU column (two times so the list of processes is sorted with tasks using more CPU first)

Which process seems to be the culprit?

If you see a program running named "Helpsvc.exe" running, click once on it (select it), then click "End Process". This is a known issue that pops it's head up occasionally. Your computer will take a L-O-N-G time to react, but ctrl-alt-del ONLY ONCE then wait.

something is not right! rundll32 is a necessary system process. mine is at 0%.

My rundll32.exe is also at 0%.

I would check for the following:

- virus: make sure your antivirus software is up to date

- spyware: if your antivirus software doesn't have spyware protection, install something like Windows Defender, adware, or spybot

- windows update: make sure your windows installation is up to date. A year ago or so, I had a similar problem with svchost.exe taking up 100%. I installed a windows update that fixed it.

Good luck

I recommend using process tamer from Donation code

What this small program does is to monitor your running program, if one tries to be funny and use up too much CPU time, it will lower it's priority and effectively gives you back control of your PC. At least enabling you to uninstall that program.

It's Free but need registration (free).

I have been using it for 2 over years now, work likes a charm B-)
