Not sure who you were directing this remark to, but the last time I checked this thread IS regarding a technical issue for people looking for a technical answer/solution. NOT about "your experience with Seagate support". IMHO, if you don't "care about the technical reason", then please don't post non-productive comments in a thread were people are looking for one.

FYI ...few additional threads detailing jumper settings for the Momentus drives:

http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=29&t=72531

Solution does not work for me, but anyone else with the Momentus series might have better luck.

OK, I would really like your help. I too, am having the infamous HDD1 Disk Error Initialization problem with my Thinkpad T61p. I have even purchased a new Western Digital Drive. It worked for a while, and then I swapped out the drive and inserted my DVD drive to watch a movie...silly me. Then I tried to reboot with the Disk Drive back into the side slot. After many 'repeated' reboots, and 'reseats' of the drive, I still get the Error Message. Does 'anybody' have any solution for this problem? Lenovo suggests that this could be a motherboard issue? Everything else on the PC works fine. I would really like any and all solutions for this problem. Many thanks!

I just wanted to say I was struggling with this initialization error for a long time - until finally googling a solution. I have a 500GB Seagate Momentus 7200.4 in a Chinese copy ultrabay adapter. Limiting the hard drive to SATA I (1.5Gbps) using a jumper cured the problems completely!

Ok, so I am receiving this error with a T60 - I can't change any jumper settings - But here is the kicker: If I wait about 5-10 minutes, the system boots & operates perfectly fine. Just an annoyance...but I've updated the BIOS (and all drivers, etc). No change.

Any thoughts? Thanks to Bill for approving me while I was remoted to my (business) NY machine while in Chicago - Sometimes fullscreen fools me.

FYI:
-formatting & reinstalling did nothing
-removing battery/cmos/power plug for a while did nothing
-320GB WD hard drive
-swapping ram did nothing
-----------------------------> Biggest thing is that I cannot access the BIOS at all.

How can you update BIOS if you don't have access?
Or did you update BIOS with the wrong version, and NOW have no access?

think I solved the problem (at least for my system):
with Hitachi Feature Tool v2.15 (actual version) changed on the HD's in
question the following settings:
- Max capable drive interface speed – changed from 3.0Gb/s to 1.5Gb/s
- Spread Spectrum Clocking – changed from nothing to Disable

My HD's are as follows:
HDD0: HITACHI HTS722010K9S (100GB) - the original one
HDD1: 2x Hitachi HTS545050B9A (500GB) and/or 1x Hitachi HTS54323232L98 (320GB)

System information:
Mainboard : LENOVO T60 200768U
Processor : Intel Core Duo T2500 @ 2000MHz
Memory : 2048MBDDR2-SDRAM
BIOS Version : 79ETE6WW (2.26 ) - the latest
ultrabay adapter: original Lenovo (but not 100% sure coz I bought it in China)

Symptoms before the change:
at least one time out of 4 cold-boots, I got the Initialization error on HDD1
for both the 500 and 320GB HD's but never with the original 100GB disk,
or with any of my old SATA 50 or 100GB (from my old T41p).

Details and tests:
- firstly I changed the settings on the one 500GB HD.
- after this change, i tried about 20 times to cold-reboot the ystem; no more
any hang or error-message - :D - first time since i have this Thinkpad.
- then i inserted the 320GB HD in the bay - already at second cold-boot the
Thinkpad hanging on boot (as usual...)
- after changing the setiings, this disk also booted normally :D

NOTES:
- on the 100GB disk, the change-speed function is disabled in Feature Tools
- on ALL Hard Disks, the "Spread Spectrum Clocking" was not set.
- there is no difference between speed before and after (with HD Tune)
- I did not tested with other HD-brands. Don't have the means to do so.

CREDITS:
The idea came to me after reading the post from piit dated Nov 26, 2010. He
changed the drive interface speed by jumper - which I couldn't coz no such
jumpers on my HD's.
Thanks piit !!!

Hope this may help to someone...

Thanks!

I have a Lenovo thinkpad T60p (20078LU) and I wanted to add an additional HD using the ultrabay adapter. I purchased a 160 GB Seagate SATA Hard Disk. When it came it wouldn't fit into the original ultrabay adapter which was for an old Hard Disk, so I looked on the Lenovo site and found that the 40Y8725 adapter had been discontinued. Amazon offered a Lenovo ultrabay SATA HD adapter (40Y8725) for $44 so I purchased it, but it does not have the LENOVO or IBM name on it, and it has a piece of blue plastic film on the bottom of the adapter. Anyway, I have had exactly the same problems :( intermitent HD error 2102 when I resume from hibernation or when I do a restart of Windows. If I attempt several times, it sometimes will boot without an error so that I can use the computer and see the second HD. Has there been any resolution of this problem since the last post in January, 2011? I cannot tell from the various posts whether it is the Drive, the adapter, the fact that it appears to be a non-Lenovo adapter, or whether it is simply a setting (I do not know how to change the switches on this drive or the speed). Thanks for any suggestions you might have.

Thanks

T60p 2007 8LU; Intel 2C 2167 MHz; 2046 MB memory; WinXP SP3; Bios 79ETE3ww (2.23), 09/12/2008; 100 GB HD original.

I have a T61p. I have a non-Lenovo drive in the Ultrabay as well. I received the same error. What has been working for me, somewhat surprisingly, is that if I power down, and leave the machine 'off' for a few minutes, when I power it back on, the 2nd drive is always being recognized. There seems, maybe, to be somewhat of a timer or timeout, which is causing the second drive not to be recognized if powered up too quickly. Give it a shot and see if leaving the machine off for a few minutes works for you too. Let me know if this works for you...thanks. And...Good luck.

After posting my original symptoms, I decided to try lowering the SATA drive interface speed from 3.0 to 1.5 GB/sec. I found an unused jumper, put it in place on the correct pins, and the drive is now working perfectly. Thus, after all this discssion, my problem was not the seagate drive, not the third party ultrabay adapter, but the SATA drive speed which now boots correctly without error.
Here is a diagram of the jumper http://seagate.custkb.com/seagate/crm/s ... cId=193775

I have the hdd initialization error with Seagate drives in both an official Lenovo ultrabay adapter on a T61 and in a third party adapter on an X301 (there was no official adapter made for the X301, as far as I can tell). I finally got jumpers and set both drives to 1.5 GB/sec. I have not had the error again on the T61 (although I don't use it as much). But I continue to have the error on the X301. I have always had the error much more frequently on the X301 than on the T61 (even pre-jumper).

Like others, on the X301 it's a bit random. maybe happens every third time I boot up. Sometimes it takes several restarts to get it to work, sometimes not. I vaguely have the impression that it happens more on battery, than when plugged in, but that's highly subjective.

Anyway, any other suggestions out there for how to solve this problem? I find it super annoying.
