i purchased a wd 250 gb scorpio to replace the 120 gb on t61. i used wd's lifeguard software to copy all the files from the old to the new drive. when i put the new drive in, the cmos will recognize this drive, but cannot boot from it, instead disk read error occurred. Any suggestions? i tried chkdsk, lifeguard diagnostic, the disk is ok. thanx for help.

Welcome to the Forum!

I have not used WD software to copy files to a new drive.

How did you connect the second drive to your ThinkPad?

I suggest a program like Acronis True Image that I and others have had excellent success with.

You can download a fully functional trial version to see if you have better success.

thanks, Brad. i connect the new drive via a hdd usb encloseure. i also purchased the acronis software and clone the old drive onto the new one. however, this time i didn't get the disk read error, but just a blinking cursor (dash).

William, give this link a try. seems the original hd was placed in the enclosure and the new hd in the tp then the drive was copied.

let us know the outcome as i will be trying this when i pick up my new hd.

this is very informative. since i purchase the acronis software via download, how can i create a bootable disk so i can do the external to internal cloning?

finally i was successful in cloning the old drive to new drive. i followed the advice of cloning from external to internal, using ATI II boot disk. everything is working well now.
