I have a strange problem. I reinstalled the Vista Ultimate that came with my T61p and installed (almost) all Lenovo drivers and utilities though System Update. I was very enthusiastic to use the fingerprint scanner for authentication (although I've never used it on my old T43 ). So I installed the drivers and utilities, enrolled my fingers and started using it. But after a few reboots I wasn't able to authenticate myself with it anymore - I swipe my finger but absolutely nothing happens. I checked all the settings, reinstalled the driver, re-enrolled my fingers - nothing helped, searched the forum - no one seems to be experiencing the same problems as me.

The strange thing is that the scanner seems to be working perfectly, because I can re-enroll myself and enroll other users, but the Fingerprint Sensor testing tool doesn't work. I'm almost sure it is a software problem. Does anybody have a clue where the problem might be? 10x!

I had the same problem initially and didn't see anyone else reporting the problem after re-installation (I was moving to Vista 64 Business). I found the problem. I had skipped the Ricoh 4 in 1 driver (unsure if I needed it, I later saw the device not having a driver in the device driver listing). Installed driver and then used fingerprint scanner on next boot. Funny the first time it didn't show up on the login screen, has been perfect every since.

By the way, the serial for the originally installed German 32-bit Vista Ultimate worked for the 64-bit English version - cool I only had to activate using the automatic phone system.

EDIT: Unfortunately, this worked only once - now I can only login with a password again

This Ricoh 4-in1 Card reader Driver seems to install well but after a reboot it is again in the list of optional updates in System Update. And this makes sense - I don't have a built-in card reader... Why the heck do I need this driver installed for the fingerprint scanner to work?

I know you've already checked this. but under the 'ThinkVantage Fingerprint Software Settings.

  Lockout time - 60
  Biometric performance - middle

Remember that to change these settings (otherwise they are grayed), 'you have to elevate administrative privileges for user'

Also double-check your device drivers and make sure nothing is missing from there..

I already had the settings set exactly as you described and all drivers seem to be working properly. The stupid device works - I can enroll fingers, etc. But I cannot log on with it. Grr..

I had the same behavior as well. Worked when in the utility, enrolled, etc...

Did you get this registry patch applied?

The only other thing I did was to remove the thinkpad fingerprint utility using "control panel" and then re-installed.

As I wrote before. The first time I hit the login screen, nothing but password prompt showed. however, scanning finger worked. I then logged off, followed by a login and everything was as before.

I'm sure this is minor, so hang in there...

I'm having the same issue with the lenovo stock windows XP installation. When I run the fingerprint reader from the control panel my finger does not register in the test window. It's only recognized when i run the tutorial. I'm running lenovo updates and i'll let you know if this resolves my problems

I just did a full system update but that didn't resolve the problem. I'm still unable to log into the machine from the windows login. Strange how I can register my fingers through the Control Center/User enrollment but the system doesn't recongize it from the 'Fingerprint Sensor' found in windows control panel.

Any advise?

I had same problems before, these apply specially when you change your os, whatever upgrade or downgrade. Seen the problem cause by the records in the bios including the os data, which you had changed, just cancel all finger records in bios, re-active in windows, follow the instruction, and should be fine. hope it can help..
I am a nuts and change the os often when in start, but my visa seen run smoth and ok speed so stop change..
