I compared before purchasing. Even had a local HP services center that would work on them (and everything else HP). Fit and finish were not as nice on the HP as their older workstations. The HP was higher in cost for the same configuration. I still would have purchased it (because of local service) but for the deciding factor you left out of the Thinkpad.... Ultrabay. Multibay was removed from the HP/Compaq line.

The price is bit higher for the HP (I am in Paris !)
My fear is that there are a lot of problems with the T61 so it's not as it was !

HP has screwed keyboard layout for their widescreen notebooks. Display (no)quality is the same for both models, horrible ...

What kind of issues?

Folks in thinkpads forum can recommend a thinkpad only; my unbiased recommendation is go with T61 you won't be disappointed.

If you've never owned a thinkpad before then you won't be complaining about the off-centered screen, many users don’t notice it at all and it has been done for a good reason also, to accommodate the antennas to provide better reception to wireless devices.

As far as the USB issue is concerned, some users have reported to have no problems at all and some have even said it only happens with Logitech’s mouse.

Even in the machines that have been reported to have the USB issue, it only affects one of the three onboard USB ports, and only with some Logitech mice. For the record, all three of the onboard USB ports on my T61p are fine, (tested with two different models of wireless Logitech mice).

The T61 display is fine for a laptop, and in fact better than most because at least it has the non glossy non reflective finish.

I have no experience wrt what HP has to offer but I think your fears re the Thinkpad are overblown. And if the HP doesn't have an ultrabay or equivalent, that would be a deal breaker for me.

thanks guys !
Just to be sure to get the best ! 2 more points:
1- regarding the CPU with T8300 is there any risk of heat since the seed is quite high ?

2- I heared that 7200 hard disk speed is much much better than 5400 is it true ? (If yes I will have to add extra to get it )
Thanks

go with the 9300 processor - the 6mb of L2 cache will make a big difference. it doesn't run hot because it is the latest Penryn processor from Intel. in fact, it runs much cooler than the slower Merom processor in my T61.

go for the 7200rpm hard drive if you want more speed - it makes a noticeable difference.

Thanks for the replay,
in fact the problem with IBM in France is that we do not have the possibility to customize the machine.
The maximum we can get today is T8300 !
