Reformatted drive, cant reinstall

Hi
Ok, here is the situation.
My friend has a thinkpad Z61t, it had been all sorts of corrupted, virus laden, etc. She asked me to reinstall XP on it, get a fresh start. I wasnt able to install by booting from CD, it gave me an error saying there were no harddrives on the laptop.
I used some third party software to delete the current partition, so right now it is just a 93GB empty space.
I'm getting the same error message trying to install from a factory XP installation cd. I believe it is the driver/software for the hard drive....
Does anyone know what i can do to reinstall XP on this thinkpad?
Any help is very much appreciated.
MOD EDIT: Please don't cross-post. Thanks!
