T60p Questions

#1 Post by wernerem » Fri Mar 28, 2008 3:21 pm

Hi there,

I have a R40 that is becoming a bit slow for the stuff I'm doing. I saw a couple of nice T60p and I'm thinking about buying one. From the stuff I have read I have a couple of questions:

1. Screen: I read that the quality (especially brightness) is not as good as before. I have 15" SXGA right now and am quite happy with it. How are 15" UXGA screens? Which models have flexscreens, some older ones still have it written, the new ones don't.

2. Noise: How noisy are the T60p?

3. Any other comments on that notebook?

I saw a couple of refurbished laptops. Did anybody tried that?

I'm happy about any answers,

Dominik

The R40 was actually the first notebook i thought about buying used - it does seems like a good value at the time also and a very sturdy notebook, but i lost my mind at the time and bought a used t42 although it was out of my price range
I've since bought a T60p (UXGA).

1. The R40 did not come with flexview (IPS) as stock, but retro-fitting it with one might be very possible. the flexview 15" SXGA+ and UXGA screens are brighter than your current lcd, and there's higher contrast also, along with "deeper" colors - but don't mistake it for being an expensive desktop LCD replacement.
It's probably as good as it's going to get for a laptop for quite some time though.
Only 15" SXGA+ and 15" UXGA screens found on T42/p,R50/p,A31/p and upwards are flexviews, but sourcing the panels was too expensive or impossible, so they're discontinued.

For UXGA T60p, these are the only model numbers, i currently remember:
2007-92G
2007-92U
2007-93G
2007-93U
2007-94G
2007-94U
2623-DDU

or see: ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/pc/pcinstitu ... twbook.pdf for models. There's no such listing for non-US thinkpads, but maybe it gives some inspiration.

2)
More noisy than the T42 which was already very quiet. Still not a big problem, but in my oppinion the cooling solution could have been designed more wisely - the GPU is iddling at 64 degrees C for me, and tops out at 94 degrees C when using it for heavy 3D, not a problem, but it's a little stupid if $10 extra spent on the HSF design could have made it run cooler.

3) Cannot use more than 3 GB of memory, in case you didn't know. Besides this, no comments :)

2007-BA1 is another UXGA IPS model. While it is indeed "based on 2007-93U", it's another one to look out for that has it.

As for noise, I've not noticed much if any.
Lenovo W540 20BG
Lenovo W520 4270-CTO
Lenovo/IBM T60p 2007-BA1
Sold: (way too many)
