Where is my backup being saved?

I did a backup tonight on my T60 using the Thinkvantage utilities.

I named the file "April-07-2008".

The backup completed, and I wanted to copy the file to my external backup HD for safety, but I can't find it anywhere in the Hard Drive.

When I load up the Backup utility, it sees the file and indicates it's stored on Local Hard Drive.

I've done a search within windows and it can't find the file anywhere.

Any idea where it's being saved?

Is this backup taking an image of my whole computer? Is it safe to assume that it's saving all the emails in my MS Outlook folders?

Thanks,
Pacman

If the Thinkvantage utility you are talking about is Rescue & Recovery, that backup location is "hidden" by the program. The only way it can be viewed is via Rescue & Recovery.

The program will save items either as data files only or the entire partition, depending on your selection at the time.

If you are using Vista, you can use Robocopy to easily backup your files to another location, rather than fool with the clunky Rescue & Recovery.

By the way, never uninstall Rescue & Recovery without deleting any backups first, otherwise you will be stuck with the hidden undeletable backups forever.

How do you specify if it's a data file or the entire partition? I don't see that feature as an option.

Thanks very much for the reply.

To be honest, I don't remember. I am running Vista now, and have not bothered with Rescue & Recovery for nearly two years. Try the Lenovo support site, they might have a help file on it, or R & R might have one, too.

By the way, which do you want to do? Backup only your personal data files, or the whole she-bang?

If it just your own files, then there are faster and better programs out there for that.

Rescue and Recovery backups are protected by filter drivers:

The backups are located under C: drive, go to Safe Mode and then look under C:\rrbackups.

I'm try to back up the whole "she bang". I have all of my personal files in a folder on the desktop, so it's very easy for me to copy those to my portable HD every week or so.

I wanted to make sure I had a full image of the HD incase I had to do a full install. I have the Rescue CD's made....but that will just take me back to the original install and I wanted something that would have all the extra programs I've installed since doing the original R&R.

I prefer using a 3rd party program for imaging my drive. It's much faster than Rescue & Recovery which really is so "80s" in it's lack of user friendliness.

I don't want to sound like a commercial, but Acronis works truly well for me.

Their file copy segment is awful, but the imaging part is grand and super reliable.

I use Robocopy (comes with Vista) or SyncBack for individual files and documents.

Acronis is nice because it will create the image right out of Windows without a need to boot to some other mode.

Restore requires a re-boot (still reasonably convenient and automated, or one would need to use a separate boot CD in case of drive failure.
