BSOD errors with Nvidia Quadro 570m FIXED

#1 Post by Love_again » Tue Apr 15, 2008 1:13 pm

For those of you who, like myself, have been harrassed repeatedly with errors and BSOD when playing videos games using intense graphics, a solution has finally been released.
Symptom

T61p with Nvidia Quadro FX 570M (NVIDIA NB8P-GL) graphics and two memory DIMMs installed may intermittently lock up, typically when doing graphics intensive processing such as a video benchmark or video game.

T61p with Nvidia Quadro FX 570M (NVIDIA NB8P-GL) graphics and two memory DIMMs installed may intermittently report has stopped responding, but has recovered typically when doing graphics intensive processing such as a video benchmark or video game.
Affected configurations
The following systems running Microsoft Windows XP, Windows Vista may be affected:

* ThinkPad T61p (type 6457, 6458, 6459, 6460, 6461, 6462, 6470)

Solution

Contact the help center and reference this tip to get your planar replaced. The substitution is FRU 42W7877 ===> FRU 44C3931
This can be obtained from the official lenovo website HERE
Hope this helps the frustrated people who need their gaming fix.
Good job on lenovo's side to have acknowledge the error and repaired it

Nick

Great find! So, the motherboard has to be replaced to fix this, and I see it applies to certain models of the T61p only (type 6457, 6458, 6459, 6460, 6461, 6462, 6470) . Are these the 15" widescreen? I guess the different models (14" std, 14" wide, and 15" wide) have different motherboards as I have a 14" std (4x3), 8891-CTO (1 DIMM) and it's not covered by the recall.

So to check what planer you have use url below.
Put your model and serial number in click continue then select "View parts lookup results for this system". Then search for text "PLANAR FRU' the FRU part number will be listed in middle column.

Can anyone confirm that the new "fixed" replacement motherboards for the GPU lock-up issue still come with 256mb of memory on the 15.4" WS T61p models with the Nvidia Quadro FX 570M (using the new and improved mobos, AKA System Planar FRU 44C3931)?

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-69684

I've recently seen some T61p units listed with FX 570M graphics and only 128mb cards for some 15.4" models listed on the "Product Information Page" at the Lenovo Support Site. I understand that the 14" T61p units came with FX 570M 128mb GPUs, but what about the 15.4" units, especially after this April 2008 T61p mobo switch to better help stabilize voltages, etc?

Here are a couple of examples of 15.4" T61p models listed with only 128mb of GPU memory with FX 570M GPUs from the Lenovo Product Information Page site:

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... idate=true

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... idate=true

Could those T61p FX 570M 128mb descriptions for some of the 15.4" models at the Lenovo site possibly be typographical errors?

Any thoughts here would be appreciated .......... Thanks :thumbs-UP:

I think the common agreement is that these are typos on Lenovo's website. See also this thread: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=29&t=71223 .
As far as your specific question on System Planar FRU 44C3931. I have that one in my T61p and it indeed has 256MB video RAM.

Thanks .... that makes sense :thumbs-UP:

Are you running a pair of memory modules now without any problems?

BTW .... Where would one look to verify the 256mb of physical memory on the FX 570M?

Both my 15.4" T61 with the 128mb NVS 140M and the 15.4" T61p report the same 512mb of memory on WinXP's Control Panel>Display>Settings>Advanced>Adapter window (which obviously includes additional memory being shared from the main system).

Thanks :thumbs-UP:
