I took all the thinkvantage crap off my T61, by the way.
I run windows update and Vista Sp1 is nowhere to be found.
What gives? how do I get it?

I used the stand alone update and it worked fine, takes a while but it was pretty smooth.

Upgrade the fingerprint reader first from the manufacturer's site and then the SP1 upgrade will show on Windows Update.
Go to the UPEK site www.upek.com and navigate to this link to download the new fingerprint driver
http://www.upek.com/support/downloads/d ... indows.asp
Then you'll have BIOMETRIC driver 1.9.2.111 driver which is Vista SP1 compatible.
After a reboot, Windows Update should offer you SP1.
At least, it worked for me.

First Thinkpad 755CX in 1995. First IBM: PC 1982 8088 w 64K RAM, dual floppy. Currently in use:
X230T with Win8Pro x64, i7, 500gb ssd; W700 WUXGA RAID 1 Blu-Ray W7Pro x64, occasionally a T61p with Win7Pro x64

Microsoft told me that they expected users to use Auto Update for SP1 (I downloaded and installed SP1 separately). Microsoft then went on to say that if the drivers (any applicable drivers) were not up-to-date, SP1 would not run via Auto Update. They expect people to keep their drivers up-to-date.
Brings back memories of SP2 for XP needing new ThinkPad drivers.

I still haven't tried to install the standalone version. I'm still waiting for the Lenovo updated X3100 driver.

so I guess the strategy is to do a manual install of sp1 and see what breaks, then you will know which drivers need a mfg supplied update since lenovo didn't supply it...
T61P, T7800 2.6G C2D, 4G PC2-5300 Ram, 15.4 WUXGA TFT Samsung, Quadro FX570M 256M, 160G 7200 Hitachi 7K200 HD, 1G Turbo Mem, Bluetooth, Intel Wifi 4965 AGN, 8X DVD rec, Alps keyboard, Vista32 Biz
I started with a T61p preload, used Microsoft Update to update nVidia, Ethernet and something else. Then I applied SP1 manually and nothing broke. Then I used Lenovo System Updater and updated everything in sight. Then I complained to Microsoft (case started) about vagaries and bugs in Vista. They acknowleged, however, said I should have updated drivers *before* applying SP1. Still, I don't really see a problem with what I did.
Nonetheless, and because I intended to all along, and because I had tried a bunch of stuff that did not work, I re-imaged the T61p back to new via Access IBM.
So then I manually downloaded, carefully saved, and exploded all the most recent drivers from the Lenovo Support site, applied the updates (re-booting one-by-one) and checking each one after installation. Then I applied SP1 manually and did all the Windows Updates.
Again, nothing broke via the manual update, however, the machine works very smoothly and quickly; there is no longer any debris from failed installs; and the Vista bugs and vagaries remain as before.
