Will T61 Recovery DVDs Work On A T60?

#1 Post by dlai » Fri Apr 18, 2008 11:33 am

Due to a hard disk crash with no backup, I need to reinstall Vista on my T60. Since the drive is dead, I was going to take the time to install a new, larger hard drive. However, I don't have the recovery disks but do have access to a set of T61 recovery dvds. Can I use these T61 dvds on my T60? I assume it will reinstall Vista, and the recovery partition, but I'm concerned about the drivers. Does anyone know if the T61 dvds are downwards compatible to the T60? Will this even work?

Thanks.

well if you are installing Vista you wouldn't need to worry about drivers so much as the recovery comes with additional drivers that Windows uses to install stuff. So assuming it would work (i think so) Vista will just install drivers for the hardware it finds, not what supposed to be there. It's still Windows afterall, just customized a bit.

In the past, the Thinkpad recovery CDs have been backwards compatible for at least 2 generations so you should be OK.

Well, everything worked. I brought a WD 320 gb drive, put it in the T60, started with dvd 1, and it installed everything correctly. I then downloaded the system update from Lenovo's website and it installed a new Broadcom Bluetooth driver and some new ATI video drivers and I was set. Pretty painless process I must say. Thanks to those who replied to my question.
