Update Management

I have acquired a T61p with Vista. I have posted lots about how I maintain a manual file of updates for my T41 and how well that worked with Software Installer (now gone).
I intended all along to re-image my T61 when I was ready to move to production and did that last night.
Over the weekend I ran Software Updater 3 and it seemed to work. I did all the updates. But I didn't see (and did not check very hard) where the downloaded files went.
I prefer to do this myself and keep my own file of updates. I can also see that this is going to be trickier than in past (different machines, different versions of Vista [32-bit vs 64-bit] and XP). I may give up on this, but for now I forge ahead.
The first anomoly I have run across is this:
There is a BIOS update out (2.14-1.08) 7luj15us for my 8891-CTO, but it says Widescreen. My 8891-CTO is not widescreen. I assume that BIOS would be different for the two different screens (BIOS would have to know about the physical screen). Is this correct?
Thanks, ... JDH
