I am currently trying this out as a "workstation" OS, and so far, it ROCKS.
But....
I am unable to get the system update app to run.
Is anyone else trying this out?

edit: system update 3.13 works under server 2008 EE SP1 x86. it installs and runs on my X300 and even reports the OS to lenovo's server as "vista".

Maybe so for the core, but I've never had vista running this good.
I have the sidebar, the only thing I don't have is Dreamscene, which I never ran on my laptop anyway.
Still kicking the tires on my installation, but so far, I like it.

gmgfarrand - did you install a bluetooth stack?

Nope....
Never had a use for it.
The only thing I miss is the fingerprint reader software.

are you sure the FPR doesn't work? assuming you have the software & driver installed, try swiping your finger when the administrator login icon is shown and see what happens. the FPR works perfectly on my X61 so i can't imagine it would be any different on your T60p.
update: i just installed the thinkpad BT stack and got my thinkpad BT mouse working without issue.

the fingerprint software gave me an error, I don't remember if it was because of the x64 OS or just the Server OS itself.
I'll try again later...

The last time I ran Windows Server was 2k...I skipped over 2k3 due to time constraints, and lack of interest...
However, now that Server 2k8 is out....Yea, I'd love to run it is a workstation for now!

I will need to update my MCSE again anyway at some point, now that 2k8 is out. Is it a LOT different from 2000? Being that I neglected to bother with 2003, how different is 2k8 from 2003???, which will give me an idea as to how it may differ from 2000.
One more thing that's very important for me: How is it compared to Vista Ultimate? Apples and oranges, gotya, but still...Does it have all the functions Ultimate has? And I take it that I can run my 32-bit apps as effortlessly through the W-o-W layer on Server 2k8 x64? That's a must...but I am tempted to believe that it will be a similar experience as far as legacy apps.
And to gmgfarrand: System Update has never, doesn't now, and likely never will, work on a Thinkpad, as the OS is not suited for a notebook anyway. I still wanna play, though.

As do you, but the drivers can be found on lenovo's site. It's fairly quick. I have all my x64 drivers as well as updated drivers, but I keep the original ones, too, just in case (my own kinda fault tolerance haha), so the System Update not working will not keep me away, and it shouldn't you either, unless you're totally lazy! lol...
Thanks all!

on the contrary, system update
does work under server 2008 EE SP1 x86. i can't confirm that it works under x64 though.

Get out. Really??? I have to try it with Server 2k8 SP1. You said x86. Does it work with x64, too?
Are you, ar anyone else here, running 2k8 x86, or x64? I pretty much HAVE to run it since it's time to update my MCSE certification. The T7600, RAM, HDD's in my system should certainly suffice for running it for learning its new features, and playing around with it, for certification purposes. Which version do you have??

i have 2008 enterprise edition (SP1) x86 on both my X61 for testing and X300 as the production environment. the X61 will soon be wiped clean and reverted to VB32 x86. since 2008 EE supports up to 32GB of memory i have little desire to go with x64. i'd rather have better 32-bit app and driver support anyway. server is trimmed down enough that there is very little speed difference between x86 and x64 and i've now read two reviews showing that x86 actually had a faster average speed with 32-bit apps. i'd believe it as 2008 x86 does seem a bit faster than vista x64. not only that but x86 saves about 4GB of installation space -- a big plus on my X300.
i don't have 2008 x64 and can't say if system update will work under it.

I have x64 loaded on my T60P and System Update is a no go.
Not worried about it, I've gotten everything to work so far.

Does Server 2k8 SP1 x86 support 4GB of RAM like Server 2003 x86... ?

just like 2003, it depends on the version.
this page has a matrix of memory support in the various editions:
