Best Replacement For Broken T42P With UXGA IPS

#1 Post by RogerBlake » Thu Apr 24, 2008 10:46 am

My much loved T42P with UXGA IPS has just suffered a smashed screen and other damage today. I haven't seen much on the new T61Ps with
the 1920x1600 screens. Can anyone comment on how these compare with the old 1600x1200 IPS (Flexview) screens. Am I likely to be disappointed ?

And does anyone know what the chances of getting the old machine repaired these days: are replacement IPS LCDs readily available ?

Any comments would be much appreciated. Thanks.

They are available. If you take it to a shop for repair, be sure to bring "a full wallet". If you fix them yourself, you can sometimes find good deals on panels,

You are likely to be disappointed. Nothing compares to a FlexView LCD.

See what you're willing to spend, and do your research. There are quite a few IPS LCDs offered on eBay, and I'm certain that some sellers ship to UK. Going rate here seems to vary between $200 and $300 for a brand new one.

And, you can also locate a nice T60p with UXGA FlexView and a Core Duo CPU for around $1200...

Good luck and let us know.

@ RogerBlake:

As George (ajkula66) says, first decide what you want to spend on having your T42p repaired. An UXGA FlexView/IPS panel for a T42p (IBM P/N: 92P6752, FRU: 92P6753 or 92P6683 or alternatively 42T0356 all being ID Tech panel type N150U3-L01) can be found on eBay frequently, and if you hang around for a while (and if you are a bit lucky!), you may pick an even new one up for all down to $100! (although other auctions on new panels end all up to around $285 these days).

Check the following threads in the Marketplace on this forum: 15" Flexview UXGA screen for sale and FS :: T42p 15" UXGA LCD Screen Assembly. If you don't want to try do such a relatively delicate repair on your own, and if you don't mind shipping your T42p over to the USA, I can warmly recommend James Arndt's service (user jampihar) - see LCD CCFL Backlight Repair/GPU Rework - I'll fix it for you!.

If you want to "upgrade" your LCD cover to a brand new one, this is very cheap - se IBM Thinkpad T42 T43 SERIES 15” LCD Cover 13R2917 NEW!. Also watch out on http://www.ebay.co.uk/ and the German ThinkPads forum.

NB: Apart for checking a new or used LCD panel for the obvious (any dead or stuck pixels, pressure marks, scratches, dents or other blemishes), also about the (in)famous "dust spec" inside the LCD? See e.g. this thread or Search this forum for "dust lcd".
