Volume controls freeze WinXP on T61p

Performed a clean install of Windows XP Pro (with SP3 slipstreamed) on T61p. Installed the drivers necessary to fix warnings in Device Manager.
Problem is if I click the Volume icon in the system tray, it will pop-up and when I try to move it the whole computer freezes. Must cut power and power back on. Same thing happens if I press one of the dedicated speaker buttons above the keyboard.
I searched around and thought it might have to do with the HotKey drivers that I had not installed. So, I installed the HotKey drivers, but still have the same problem.
Any ideas?
