T61p and Arctic Silver 5 thermal grease

#1 Post by Estrogen Kid » Thu May 01, 2008 12:25 am

hi all,

I have a syringe of Arctic Silver 5 and I was considering opening up my T61p and replacing the ceramic thermal grease that came with it with arctic silver. I've done this before on my A31 without any problems and temps dropped by about 5 C all around.

a few questions though:

1. has anyone tried this sort of modification before? it'd be nice to know what are the results and how difficult it is

2. will it void my warranty if i open up my t61p?

difficulty level should be the same as on your A31. Expect more or less the same result

it wont void your warranty if you don't break anything while applying AS5. In other words, don't make it obvious for Lenovo that you've done some modifcations.

I upgraded my T2500 CPU to my current T7600 with silver grease. Not AS5, but it works great. It's silver paste. It's been humming along very nicely. What exactly are you looking to upgrade/modify?

I used it before on my old T60. It works great in reducing the temperature. I get around 5-7C lower than before applying.
I don't use it on my T61 simply because the new cooling fan seems to be better, there are no need to do it.

the main reason why I want to do this is because my GPU reaches 70 C under load which I consider pretty high.

I intend to remove the ceramic thermal grease on the CPU and GPU and replace it with AS5.

If I disassemble the T61 would there be a tell-tale sign if it was opened, such as a sticker that voids the warranty if removed? just wondering.

Artic Silver on T61P

#6 Post by akim » Fri May 02, 2008 12:17 am

Hi Estrogen Kid,

I replaced my processor from T7700 to T9300 and applied Artic Sylver 5.
Take care to spread AS5 only on the core, not elsewhere and take the time to do it neatly cause AS5 tend to spread.

My temperatures on heavy load (several Virtual PC images or Video encoding ) do not go higher than 70°C.

In normal use, it's about 55°C for the proco.
I am using tpfancontrol and trigger fan when temp reaches 60°C at 3 fan speed.
