Kingston Memory compatible with T61

Hi,

I recently tried to add more RAM to my T61 (model 6460-65G). Since Kingston is about 1/3 the price of Lenovo's original memory, I went for this.

It all seemed to run smoothly and my Vista x64 recognized all 4 GB. However, when I inserted my XD picture card in the card reader the computer froze and I got a BSoD. The error message I got said something about "MEMORY_MANAGEMENT". After searching the web I found out that this was (or could be) related to incompatible memory.

I tried without the new RAM and then with it again, but it wouldn't work with the Kingston Memory (tried both slots too). The other 2 GB RAM is Lenovo, btw. Also tried with the different XD cards from different cameras and card readers, but that didn't make any difference. Both Compact Flash and SD worked fine, though.

So, even though this RAM was said to be Lenovo compatible it didn't work. Anyone have similar experience with other brands or do I have to purchase the Lenovo?

The details for the Kingston RAM was:
Kingston 2 GB SO DIMM 200-pin, DDR II, 667 MHz and should be equal to IBM 40Y7735, IBM 40Y8404, IBM 40T6629.

I don't know what is wrong but any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance,
- iau

I also use (maybe the same) kingston memory in my T61 (2GB Lenovo + 2 GB Kingston).
But never had any issues with it - so maybe you got a bad module?

Ever tried running MemoryTest?

Thanks for your quick reply! It's been a little over a month since I returned the Kingston memory. Since the memory module was factory sealed when I got it I never thought it could be faulty. I did run a few Windows diagnostics, but none reported the memory as being bad.

Have you tried yours with a XD picture card? I had it in my computer for at least a week before I inserted the XD card, and had no problem whatsoever during that week.

that's no guarantee of a working module.   most manufacturers send them out the door without performing extensive testing because of time and cost.

memtest86+ is a great resource for testing new modules.

Thanks for the link.

I understand that the memory module shouldn't have any problem om a T61, so it's safe to order another one and hope for the best. If I run into the same problem I will run the memory test and see if it reports back any error.
