Purchased a new T60 type 2007-5DG but it's marked T60p...

#1 Post by titone » Fri May 02, 2008 1:25 pm

Hello to all, I'm new... and sorry for my bad english!

I just purchased, from an authorized dealer, a bran new T60 type 2007-5DG.
The firts look of cartoon box (perfectly sealed with secured scotch) displayed an original Lenovo label with bar codes, serial number and the machine type 2007-5DG and the words "ThinkPad T60p" .... (!).
I opened the cartoon box, opened the display of notebook and... it's marked "T60p" on the right side down (!)
The back of notebook is also signed corectly with the machine type "2007-5DG" and correct serial number.
I always read the specifications on the official Lenovo web site (and other online store) and they confirmed that the 2007-5DG is a T60 model (with a CPU T2500 2Ghh and ant Ati 1300 GPU) , not a T60p. This is a mismatch with the specifications.

I turned on the ThinkPad and here the result, confirmed also by Pc Doctor utility:

- the CPU is a T2400 1.83 Ghz (not a T2500 2.00 Ghz) :x
- the graphics is an ATI Fire GL V5200 with 512 Mb of ram (not an ATI X1300 with 64 Mb)

The bad is the CPU, the good is the graphics.... The display, ammount of Ram, HD capacity are correct.

I still non understand why this machine is sold as a T60 2007-5DG named, when in fact is a T60P with a basic display (no Flexview) :?:

I called the Support and told me that this machine should be a T60 with T2500 2.0 Ghz cpu and ATI x1300 graphics (checked by serial number). It's no doubt an assembly error... :(

Any suggest?

Thank you in advance for you replies.

Welcome to the forum!

You should be able to look up the parts that originally shipped with your unit, on Lenovo's webpage.

Now, I don't know about Italy, but if you went to U.S. site, you would go into "warranty" then "automatically detect warranty for this system" (IE needed, no Opera or Firefox) and then into "list of the parts originally shipped with the system" (or something like that).

BTW, your VRAM is 256 and not 512Mb...

In my opinion, the motherboard has been swapped and that would explain the differences.

You can always swap the CPU...

I'd just work on getting Lenovo to admit that they've sent you the machine with wrong specs and adjust them for warranty purposed.

Good luck ane let us know.

Personally I'd be happy with a better GPU and call it a day. You're not going to see a lot of performance difference between a T2400 and a T2500. The problem may become when you go to get it fixed under warranty though. So I'd recommend that you tell the reseller to fix the records with Lenovo. If he can't do that then return it. He didn't sell you the correct machine.

From what I can tell, you're in the clear regarding warranty. If you feel like swapping the CPU for a faster one, that board will take a C2D (7200 or so) no questions asked...

Good luck and keep us informed.

Thank you, just another question: in absolute it's better the "original" configuration with the T2500 2.0 Ghz and Ati 1300 or my "strange configuration" with T2400 1.83 Ghz and Ati Fire 5200?
Mainly I'll use this pc for office applications and some intensive computation programs... In all cases Im buyin a 2 Gb memory module.
Thank again for your precious help!

Thank you to all,
I’m happy with this “strange” configuration, but I’m also surprised and a little disappointed about phone support of Lenovo. They insisted that a 2007-5DG is equipped with a T2500 2 Ghz cpu and a Ati 1300 gpu (as I also know), but they not tried a searching by machine type and serial number (at Lenovo web site, accessible even for us final customer, by clicking “Warranty status” then “View parts lookup for this system”); the results (already posted above in this topic) show clearly that the cpu mounted is a T2400 1.83 Ghz and the gpu is an Ati Firle GL 5200 with 256 Mb of ram.
I suggest to Lenovo to update these information and technical data about this notebook, to prevent more confusing for customer and call center operators.
And… it’s fun that a T60p equipped with an Ati Fire 5200 show “only” a 1024*768 resolution on 15 tft monitor (because it’s a standard 15 version, no Flexview, etc.) :)

Some years ago, when IBM/Lenovo changed to the T43 series from the T42 series, you'd suddenly see some new configurations popping up that wasn't available normally. The combination of Radeon 7500 and 14.1" SXGA+ was suddenly available for the T42.
I guess this is due to the fact that they had a lot of stock of Radeon 7500 that they had to get rid of as fast as possible, because T43 was the first T4x series not to have a Radeon 7500 as the lowest configuration, but GMA950 instead.

Now you'll see that Lenovo has a large stock of FireGL V5200, and a stock of 15" bezels, frames and other parts, but no flexview screens. So what you get is what was possible for them to assemble, including the CPU and GPU. It would be much more expensive for them if they had to wait, build or source an X1300 board and the correct CPU, but i admit it should have had it's own model. no.
You'd typically see attractive combinations, i.e. either high resolution display and lower end graphics, or lower resolution display and high-end graphics.
If both were low-end, it wouldn't sell fast enough.
If both were high-end, it would still be too expensive to sell cheaper if it's phased out - IMO.

You'll see the same at some point with the T61 series, when they're phased out more and they can't get all parts.

There is about nill difference between the T2400 and T2500 in real life usage. If you had to upgrade, step up to the T7xxx series instead if you need 64 bit compatibility.
On the other hand v5200 is nearly twice as fast as the x1300 when it comes to certain 3d apps, so personally i think it's a nice "trade-off", unless you really need the extra battery life. :)

Too bad about the phone support really that they didn't know or didn't want to check.

titone - The spec's of your T60p 2007-5DG looks like very similar to an offer that was available here in the UK from Lenovo reseller: Insight UK within the first quarter of this year - They were end of line NEW T60p's with 15" XGA LCD's, ATi V5200 chip-sets, 80GB HDD's and T2400 Core Duo's - The description & spec's did not give the specific model code except that they were from the type 2007 series.

A similar occurrence took place last year, again within the first quarter of 2007, when NEW end of line T43p's were spec-ed with 80GB HDD's and Sonoma m780 cpu's for less than £600!

As forum member Troels has pointed out, it does seem that Lenovo will put together ThinkPad configurations with off the shelf parts/components that they have large quantities of, which is definitely cost effective and hence generates them a revenue too! :)

EDIT: - Have just spotted a very similar T60p for sale on ebay in the UK - It is type/model: 2007-FE2.

Now, what I would do is to look for an IPS LCD and associated parts (cable, inverter) and slip it in at my leisure...

Anyone surprised... :D
