"Notes:
(1*) If Windows Vista 64-bit is already installed on your system, then you must use the bootable CD ISO format of this BIOS update."
1. Why? generally
2. Why not for a vista32 system, or other systems?

Their software for updating the BIOS is written for Vista 32-bit. Making it run on Vista 64-bit, it seems, it not worthwhile for them. (Maybe not enough customers use it yet.) Operating systems generally think it's pretty bad for any application to overwrite the BIOS, so they require work-arounds (in the case of Windows), or they just provide no mechanism at all.
It (the Windows updater) also won't work with Linux, QNX, ReactOS, Solaris, Haiku or anything else, so those all need to use the ISO.

The above link will lead you to a Vista x64 ISO Recorder I have been using to burn a cd to install the BIOS updates.
Erik, another forum member, suggested it to me and it has been working great.
