I read in a post that someone upgraded a T60p CoreDuo to a Core2Duo. Is that possible that a user can do that? If it is possible, is it beneficial to do it? Should one do it? What are the drawbacks and/or advantages of doing it? If it is possible, is the "upgrade" worth the effort? Im new to this and still learning. I have T60p 2.33 GHz, 3MB RAM. Thanks for your time in answering.

It's possible to do it yourself, if you feel comfortable enough to take apart your machine and replace the CPU.

The benefit will vary greatly, depending on how you use the machine. If you need to run a 64-bit operating system and 64-bit applications, then you'll need that 64-bit CPU that the Core 2 provides. There is no other significant benefit on the T60 or T60p, since it can use only 3GB of RAM in any case.

Depending on the CPU you get, it may have a larger cache, and give better performance at the same clock speed for CPU-dependent tasks on large datasets.

In the T61/p, you can use 4GB of RAM with a 64-bit OS.

I made the swap.

The CPU replacement is fairly straight forward. No software or hardware need to be updated or replaced.

Some functions seem just a little faster while others seem much faster. I like the price/performance increase and thought it was worth it.

Ditto, on an R60 though. Was worth the upgrade from a 1.83 Core Duo to a 2.0Ghz Core 2 Duo. On your T60 check for a revision 3 board and make sure that you have the latest BIOS before the swap. Use cpu-z to check board revision.

EOMtp is right. Considering your laptop only has 3MB ram, it won't make any difference no matter which CPU you put in! -Just joking-

I just upgraded the T2400 in my T60(1GB Ram) to T5500 CPU and as far as I can tell there is no difference in anyway on Windows XP. Maybe it will show some difference if you put a 64-bit system on a machine with 64-bit CPU like T5500 and above?

I upgraded from a T2600 to a T7400 (both at 2.16 GHz), and to tell you the truth, there is not much difference. It seems a tad faster, but it also a tad warmer as well.
