T60 - Getting a bit toasty lately.

#1 Post by SHoTTa35 » Sun May 11, 2008 2:53 pm

I'm not sure if it's because we are getting closer to summer or what but my T60 runs warm to the point i feel heated air coming out the vents.

As you can see my T60 from my sig is a decent one but not super anything. I'm running a clean install of Vista (always have) and my temps when running in Balanced mode (AC plugged in) gets so hot sometimes i can feel the heat on my legs. Lately i've been running it in Power Saver mode (even with AC plugged in) cuz just sitting idle and downloading it gets so hot in Balanced mode too.

I've cleaned my fans
Reinstalled several times from the same disc i used before (this one has SP1 integrated)
Installed XP
Installed original T60 that came with system.

I noticed this thread a while back:

BIOS Power settings cause Vista to hang on boot

and it seems i have the same issue also. So with the AC adapter plugged in, even if not doing much it's running full speed and not allowed to throttle down. Is anyone else having this issue with the mentioned thread or the resulting issues i'm having?

Using the Power Saver (on battery not AC) option in vista these are my temps:

CPU 42°C (0x78)
APS 34°C (0x79)
PCM 35°C (0x7a)
GPU 64°C (0x7b)
BAT 32°C (0x7c)
BAT 31°C (0x7e)
BUS 37°C (0xc0)
PCI 40°C (0xc1)
PWR 39°C (0xc2)

When i plug in the AC adapter that CPU goes up to like 54C and everything else (except GPU) goes up about 5-10C also.

Not sure if this will help, but here's what I have on my T60 running Vista. I use TPFancontrol to limit the irritating fan sound. Fan does not run all the time at the settings below:

1 cpu 63°C (0x78)
2 aps 43°C (0x79)
3 crd 43°C (0x7a)
4 gpu 72°C (0x7b)
5 bat 38°C (0x7c)
7 bat 35°C (0x7e)
9 bus 44°C (0xc0)
10 pci 53°C (0xc1)
11 pwr 58°C (0xc2)

This is a custom scheme which includes "Adaptive" and "Balance all Parameters" GPU is set to "ignore" in fan control.

The computer does not "feel" warm on the palm rest, but there is some minor heat exaust from the side and the chassic feels a little "warm-ish" on the bottom. I use little feet on the rear of the chassis to elevate it about 1.5 inches off the desktop.

Hope this helps a little.

yeah, see that's funny -

here is what i get now on Balanced (idle)

CPU 67°C (0x78)
APS 44°C (0x79)
PCM 41°C (0x7a)
GPU 74°C (0x7b)
BAT 37°C (0x7c)
BAT 35°C (0x7e)
BUS 48°C (0xc0)
PCI 52°C (0xc1)
PWR 54°C (0xc2)

This is new though, at first it would just chill out at around 48C doing nothing on Balanced profile. I dunno...

check something for me if you have a min... restart your system and go into the BIOS - Config - Power - Adaptive Thermal Management - Scheme For AC - Balanced.

Save settings and reboot. Can you boot Vista or anything? Mine just comes to where the logo is fading into view but locks before it fully comes up. If that happens you'll just have to hard reset then change your bios setting back to Maximise Performance.

I'm wondering if this is related to the new BIOS that came out that i installed about 2 weeks back.

DHL Coffin on the way

#5 Post by SHoTTa35 » Wed May 14, 2008 1:23 pm

LOL.. ok well my Thinkpad isnt dead but it's just been bugging me a bit more than normal that i called IBM to get it serviced. They are sending the usual DHL coffin to me tomorrow.

I can't even install the OS (restore discs or clean MSDN Vista/XP) without the system shutting off (from overheating i guess). It's not the graceful, "system is shutting down" it's just like:

installing 97%
Black screen.

LOL - oh well... off she goes... they said 5-7days is the usual turn around time. Does it go to Atlanta or somewhere else? I think they said there's an IBM place in VA and PA? When i get replacement parts from IBM they come from a place in PA so even via normal ground shipping it gets there in 1 day. If that's the case then hopefully i can get the system back by Saturday :)

I might just print out this thread and put it in the box with the system. :)

When I had Arctic Silver Ceramique on my T60 (in sig), I couldn't get it above 63C. This was running it full load for over an hour straight. And I was not using tpfancontrol on it.

Looks like I need to apply some fresh silver paste. I'm always in the mid 60's C with my T7600, and the GPU is hot as hell. When a Bluray is watched, it goes into the high 70's CPU-wise. Whoo...

You may also want to try blowing some compressed air through the fan assembly. My T60p over time caught up quite a bit of dust, even though it wasn't visible from the outside.

But when I sprayed some air in, a dust cloud came out.

fans are always clean :) I make sure of that. I'm not sure what could be the cause but it's just been acting weird.

Still have warranty till 2010 so figured i'd just use warranty and see what they can do and then if not i have some artic silver 5 to put to it :)

I'll just throw my own experience in: For the past week or so I've been noticing about 6 to 7 degree C. increase in my idle temperature, which is usually around 50 C. The temperatures during applications and gaming all seemed elevated as well.

Yesterday, while doing some problem solving related to XP SP3, I opened Power Manager and noticed that in the drop-down box for the Power Scheme, nothing was selected, it was just a blue field. I selected the Energy Star setting, which I believe is the default and within moments my temperature, according to ThinkPad Fan Control, settled back to 50 C. and all operating temperatures are back to what I consider to be normal. YMMV, but it might pay to look.

hey man, is that 50 C when playing games? I've noticed that air coming out of my t61p's vents was extremely hot while playing battlefield 2141. went back 2 normal when not playing.

Your situation is normal... :) The 50C is while idle and probably 85C while playing games. It's working as designed so fear not :).

As for my power settings - i normally could use Balanced or "Thinkpad Default" and it would run fine forever. Lately though i gotta use the Power Saver option (which limits the CPU also to 50% (1Ghz) ) Even though on balanced it's normally idle and goes up when needed. I check the task manager and it's sitting around 1-2% most of the time. I formatted and installed just windows and it does the samething.

Oh well.... coffin is here.. came yesterday morning but i'll ship it off later today so i can try to get some work done with it first.I don't have a spare system like some of you guys but hopefully it's less than "5-7 business days" that they said.

No. Not while playing games. It's 50 C. at idle, or when using Word or Excel or on the web, like now. Gaming temps get into the low to mid 60's.

Noticed that your from DC. I had my thinkpad serviced in McLean, VA near Tysons Corner before. They seem to have worked with a lot of Thinkpads... HOWEVER, they are not really aware of the heat issues and if encountered, they just reseat the fan and apply new paste to the CPU. When I had a similar problem I asked them to use Arctic Silver and they used that instead of the other paste that they use for the rest of their lot... (some chinese name). I wouldn't recommend to do it over there but directly to the depot because ONLY at the depot is where they can fix "2" problems at the same time and that they have all the parts at hand. At the depot your fan will probably be replaced. Maybe even the motherboard. (If it was at the Mclean place they would most likely reseat the fan.) I've found the thermal pads to the GPU most effective when placed in the first shot (not when it is taken out and reseated.) So it is probably better to get new fans anyways. Enough mumbling and GL.

Just remember to explicitly tell the depot that before they send the thinkpad back to you address that GPU temp is running high... and to make sure it is within "normal range" - (whatever that is...)

Currently my T60 x1400 2.0 at room temp 26 C is registering 53 CPU/ 52 GPU with power manager on low performance settings.
