T61 clone mode to 1280 x 1024 projector

The T61s here at work have 1440 x 900 screens and we have 1280 x 1024 projectors in some of the conference rooms.

Does someone have detailed instructions on how to get clone mode to work such that the projector has it's native resolution and the laptop display has the same thing displayed, even if it's scaled down to fit?

I've tried both the NVIDIA Control Panel and Presentation Director and can't seem to get it to work.

Note: My company uses a custom Windows XP based image not the Lenovo installed OS dictribution. We do not install Presentation Director by default.
