Why my New t61 hard drive so noisy?

#1 Post by wangzt » Sat May 17, 2008 8:42 am

I have bought my T61 for just one month ago. But find the hard drive is so noisy. How about yours? is my hard drive defective? or it is normal? thanks

It sounds grinding all the time

I 'am using XP sp3, the hard drive is HITACHI 160G 5400 :( :(

I had the same problem with my factory installed Hitachi (a 100 GB 7200 rmp). An awful grating noise accompanied with some vibration.

All the tests I ran showed the drive as being OK, and the drive has been in use on and off for about a year now, so I don't think there's a lot wrong with it.

I bought a higher capacity drive a month or so later and have kept the old one as a spare.

Since then, I got a few more Hitachi 200 Gb drives and although there was a subtle difference between almost all of them, they are all a lot quieter than the original.

My 5400rpm Hitachi HD is the loudest thing in my laptop. I bought an external drive that I plan to swap eventually, but too lazy atm. Either way, it's ridiculous how loud the drive is, even with my fan on.

Hitachi hard drive are not very fine particularly 5400 rpm. They make a lot of noise, power consumption is high and performances are poor.

Buy a Seagate Momentus 7200.2 and everything will be nice.

Agree - I changed over my noisy Hitachi HDD which constantly clicked (due to the heads loading & unloading @ idle) for a Seagate Momentus 7200.2 - can confirm this HDD is whisper quiet with little less vibration too :D
