New Hard drive (bare metal) install on T60p

#1 Post by mdobin » Mon May 19, 2008 2:39 pm

Alas, the OEM drive failed. It responds to no utilities and will not recover. I received the dreaded l_inst.nls error.

New drive arrives tomorrow. The IBM Thinkvantage button saved me so I want to set my new drive up with the Thinkvantage recovery software. Has anyone done a brand new install?

Many have and there are threads that talk about it too.

I would simply install the drive and put in the first disk of your recovery set and you are on your way.

Performing a recovery with your recovery disks should leave you will everything that came on your ThinkPad including Thinkvantage.

I don't have a recovery set and it wasn't shipped with one. T'were it that easy.

I see on the Lenovo site that I can download R&R and I have XP that I can install.

I did look for this info in the FAQ, but didn't find anything talking about starting from scratch.

Is your Thinkpad still under warranty? If so they should send the recovery discs for free in the case of a hard drive failure.
If you ask nicely in the marketplace someone might send you a set.
