T61 Replacing smart card reader

Just picked up a used T61. The laptop comes with the integrated smart card reader which i doubt i'll ever used. Question is can i remove it and replace with something else, eg the memory card reader?
240x (lost) - T30 (broken) -T61 (working!) - R61 (broken)

Looks like it is possible. Unfortunately it means taking the motherboard out in order to replace the entire slot. Hmmmm
