Quick Confirmation on IPS Panel..

#1 Post by DarkScythe » Wed May 28, 2008 5:28 pm

Hello,

I'm in the process of finalizing a deal with a seller willing to part with a T60 15" laptop for a good price, and he claims it is an IPS panel, but is unsure of how to check. He says it runs a 1400x1050 resolution though. Does a 15" SXGA+ panel on the T60 guarantee it's an IPS?

Thanks in advance.

Both 15" SXGA+ and UXGA displays are Flexview.

To be honest, it should be very easy to check anyway. When in doubt, have him tilt the display back and check the viewing angles. A TN panel's colour inversion becomes very apparent in vertical viewing angles.

You'll love Flexview—it's absolutely beautiful. :)

Okay, thank you.

I just wanted to make sure there weren't any 15" SXGA+ non-flexview panels out there. I'll ask about the viewing angles though.

I do love the Flexview -- have it on my 15" SXGA+ T42 :D
Unfortunately it kind of died. :(
The heatsink's fan stopped spinning, so the CPU was overheating and locking up. Then the hard drive failed.. and now it seems the LCD is showing some weird yellow thing around the sides. I'll probably sell it for parts, but it's why I was looking for a new replacement. I was about to get an R61 for cheap but then I found out the 61 series no longer have IPS panels.

Thanks again.

Before making such a drastic decision, I suggest you consider contacting forum.thinkads.com user jamiphar (= James Arndt) who is (no doubt!) able to repair your T42 - see James' thread: LCD CCFL Backlight Repair/GPU Rework - I'll fix it for you! - also pointing to him and his brothers site: Arndt Computer Services.

I have been fortunate to have been able to have James help me with several T42-related issues, and I simply cannot emphasize enough how pleased I am with James' help - he is absolutely a superb ThinkPad doctor!

Best regards,

Johan

Thanks for the heads up Johan.

Although, I thought they only did CCFL repair and the GPU reballing.. at least that's what's advertised. The fan in my T42 is dead, there's no hard drive (no way to recover the data on the dead one) and I don't even know what's wrong with the LCD having a yellow tint around the edges..

Nope, this was true for all T series models. R series used to have FlexView as well but starting with R52 you got crappy TN panel only.

Yes, I'm aware that most of the other models have TN panels. I should have been more specific with that comment though, I was referring to the T60's not having any 15" SXGA+ TN panels.

You can check the FRU numbers originally installed in any particular machine if you know the Type number and Serial number.

Although there are inconsistencies, this website is still the best reference:

http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/TFT_display

I have three 15 inch ID Tech SXGA+ panels: T42, R51, R52. Both the T42 and R51 are much brighter than the R52. So I think the R52 is a TN type and the other two are IPS/Flexview.
