Upgrading Memory - Warranty void?

#1 Post by Quagmyre » Thu May 29, 2008 2:04 pm

Hi all,

I've actually decided on a T61p model which I ordered today, along with a couple of customizations.

Since the certified dealer takes a horrendous amount for a memory upgrade to 4GB, I decided to buy 4 GB of memory myself (for a third of the price demanded by the dealer) and pop it into the T61p myself.

Then it came to me:

I ordered my T61p with a 4 year pick-up and return warranty. Will I void my warranty if I replace the memory myself?

Normally I would say no. In the US this is usually not a problem. I would normally not send any memory with a ThinkPad going for repair unless the memory could be the problem. Even if it could be the problem they may just send you the replacement memory for you to install and send back the bad memory.

I said normally because what happens here in the US doesn't always happen elsewhere.

I would keep the memory that your ThinkPad ships with just in case you need to send it in and they insist on having the shipped memory.

Mermory is CRU, so it never voids the warranty.

Cool! Thanks to all of you for pointing me in the right direction.

CRU is the key term here. So I'm even allowed to swap hard drives.

Good to know.

Yes, hard disk is also CRU. Check hardware maintenance manuel to know all what you can change. There are a lot of parts. :)

G.Skill. They also have 2 x 2GB CL4. It does not really improve performances much... They go up for about 0% (!) to 3%.

Thanks for your information.
I'll stick with some 2x2GB Crucial CL5 667 MHz RAM then.
