CPU compatibility on T61p - temporary downgrade

#1 Post by richk » Fri May 30, 2008 5:19 pm

I just got a high-end T61p that came without a CPU. I have one coming, a T7700, which was the original one, but it won't be here for a few days. I would like to do some preliminary work, but I need to get it running. I have a T2300e processor that is a "spare". Will the machine run with that CPU, temporarily?

Thanks

T2300e? Isn't that one of those old original Core Duos? If it is, it will not fit.

It is a fairly recent CPU, but it is a slightly dumbed down version of the T2300. I also have a T2400, but that is mounted in a board and I would rather not pull it apart.

Tt came with T7700, which is also 479. The chip certainly fits physically

All of them (Pentium M, Core, Core 2) have 478 pins. The P-M socket was called "Socket 479" (just to differentiate from the desktop Socket 478), the Napa (T60) Core/Core 2 's socket was called Socket M, and the Santa Rosa (T61) socket is called Socket P. They all will not fit with each other, Intel moves a pin or two around with every new socket.

So if it does physically fit, it will work, since older ones will not fit. I'm guessing it's one of those Pentium Dualcores made for Socket P.

It won't fit.

the T60 has a different socket than the T61P. Basically, don't count on a Santa Rosa based motherboard to support the older Napa motherboard's processors.

The Core Duo and Core 2 Duo T72,4, even numbers are not the same processor as the Core 2 Duos that have an odd number such as T7100, T73, etc.

Core Duo T2300E SL9DN (C0) SL9JV (D0) 1666 MHz 2048 KiB 667 MT/s 10x 0.762/1.3 V 13.1-31 W Socket M FC-µBGA May 2006 LE80539GF0282ME $209

Core 2 Duo T7700 SLA43 (E1) 2400 MHz 4096 KiB 800 MT/s 12x 1.0375 - 1.3 V 35 W Socket P May 9, 2007 LF80537GG0564M $530

Your T2300e is a Core Duo w/ the virtualization capability stripped out of it, but certainly not a new processor. I had one in my E1705 that I bought in 2006.

The answer is that it fits, but it won't start.
