Hi , new to the forum and just wondering if it is possible to replace my LCD/rollcage with one with an integrated camera on my T61.

The FRU number of my LCD is 42T0406.

If anyone has the integrated camera, how is it?

Thanks!

How much did this upgrade cost?

I am happy with the quality of the webcam image on my T61. I used a logitech webcam [1.3 mega pixel] on my T30 and the quality of the image was almost identical.

those three FRU parts are $100 total, give or take.

Sounds interesting...

This sounds like it would be a fun mod to do. However, I have to wonder if adding the camera would void my warranty...?

FWIW -- There does exist a support package for Win2000 for the integrated camera option. I checked. In fact, this is the link for it.

I'd be shocked if it didn't void it. I think adding Bluetooth after the fact requires the same bezel removal, and that's a voiding process.

Hi, nice to see so many responses.

Was it difficult to install this? Is there a guide on the net which will give me some step by step instructions?

Also can anyone confirm that this webcam works in ubuntu/linux as well?

Thanks all

I'd also be interested to hear more on how you did it. I'm looking around for the parts at the moment and seems the Bezel is hard to get in the UK (where did you source from). But I guess the harder part is putting the thing in place. I found the videos of thinkpad engineers and how they disassemble a t61. Do you have any hints or tips for that?

Thanks

Hi,

I've done many upgrades on my T61 (WWAN/Antennas, WUSB, WLAN) and I'm keen to do this mod.

I've looked at the T61/T61p 15.4" hardware maintenance manual and there doesn't seem to be an option to upgrade the bezel to the camera.

Is this mod only available for the 14" model?

Older topic, yes, but...

I just ordered the parts to do this mod. Cost is still about the same ($100 or so).

Soon as I get said parts, and a couple of spare hours, I'm giving the mod a shot. I will post my results.

Keep the peace(es).

Wow great, I was trying to gather info on such a mod. I have a T61 4:3 ( SXGA+ ) myself and I was wanting to upgrade it to a camera.

Thanks !

Arrrghhhh....

No, it's not talk-like-a-pirate day. I just discovered, much to my disgust, that (apparently) only the widescreen models of the 14.1-inch display T61's can accept the camera mod.

If anyone knows differently, please say so!

So -- Before I start negotiating with Spare Parts Warehouse for a return authorization, would anyone like to buy a brand-new camera and bezel kit? My loss, your gain...

PM me if interested. Thanks.

It's 2014 now but I am nonetheless very happy with a T61p, which I acquired some years ago but only recently started using. It has a 15.6" LCD but no webcam. I never thought I would want a web cam but now, I think I have had one I might, and I'd prefer it to be built in.

So are we saying T61s with 15.6" LCD did not come with and cannot be retrofitted with a web cam?

I have done the swap on a Z61t, it was very straight forward with no surprises. Like you already know. Cable, Camera and Bezel. Picture is not great, but acceptable (sort of). I did it to say I could, but I dont use it at all. Im thinking that I was required to load a driver to have it seen, or in other words it was not USB/Plug in Play. Haunt flea bay for parts.

You don't need a new bezel. You can just drill/cut a small hole in your existing bezel. That is what I did on my T500.
