Discrete GPU vs. integrated

Hello. I'm new to the forums and am contemplating my next notebook purchase. I'm leaning toward the T61 and hoping that someone might give me their impressions of the differences between discrete and integrated graphics.
For the most part, I will be doing Windows and web application development on this machine, but I do foresee myself dabbling in some light 3D modeling. I'm pretty sure the integrated graphics would handle what I would throw at it, but discrete graphics would, of course, be better suited for the task.
My question is how much of a difference might I expect between the two with regard to battery life (time on a charge) and heat generation?
Anyone have any experience with both?
