display properties are okay but ---

#1 Post by cityman » Sat Jun 14, 2008 8:09 am

my resolution is 1680 x 1050 using 16 bit (medium) color quality.

the fonts and the icons seemed smaller than what i have been formerly used to with my old computer.

i know the different ways of using the Display Properties and the advance settings whether using windows or the browser. nothing really works except when using the browser and press ctrl and + to enlarge the web page.

anyone know any software (or ideas) which will make the text and icons of the winxp pro system larger without affecting and overlapping (making it difficult to read) the other words?

thanks ahead of time

Hi,
since I have WUXGA screen, I know exactly what you are talking about ;) That was by the way one of the main reasons why I moved on to Vista. Vista can handle all these visual settings like dpi, font sizes etc. just better than XP without overlapping and stuff. This is what I did with XP: increasing the dpi to 120 and then a little bit playing with the advanced settings; particuliarly as to icon sizes I prefered to set large icons and then make them smaller through the advances settings if necessairy. And of course it also depends on how big you want to have icons and fonts. These adjustments did the trick for me for IE7; however they don´t work for Firefox (at least not in my case). I can´t imagine you could not achieve any acceptable sizes using dpi + advanced settings + view (icons), but I admit it´s a lot of hassle.

Cheers

A few things more that came to my mind:

1. when making icon font sizes larger they would cover parts of your icons, so you may want to adjust icon spacing (vertical);
2. enlarging fonts would make things unreadable in XP IE7 browser due to overlapping as you pointed out. Sorry, I forgot about this (haven´t use XP for a long time and hence thought it would be the same way as in Vista IE7);

There were also some more tricks. I have to think a bit and will post back ;)

thanks for the replies. i can totally sympathized why you went to vista. i did a lot of tinkering around with most of the settings. after a while - i said to myslef - forget it and bring a magnifying glass <lol> to read and see.

that is the way it is.

again thanks for your thoughts. you would have thought someone would have created an easy suggestion.

maybe someone else reading these post might know something.

cheers

Steve Bass article on Clear Type offers a possible remedy

#5 Post by cityman » Sun Jun 15, 2008 8:07 am

He talks about ClearType and its variants. Here is the initial link

http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,14509 ... =nl_sbxcol

i have not looked at the article links yet but the initial suggestion using the clear type effect (in display properties was remarkably striking).

as a side note - the "effects" in display properties have a option for -large fonts. i will check it to see what it will do.

a few hours later -- and an edited re-entry remark

i just finished installing clear type. wow what a difference in seeing. definitely better.
