look at the load cycle count, it's 759584. under 600000 is considered safe. also there's a lot of "pre-fail" statuses. i've been running ubuntu linux and i didn't know that it aggressively parks the hard drive about 10 times a minute!

need a replacement, preferably a 200gb 7200rpm drive.

I had a 100GB, 7200RPM Seagate (Momentus 7200.1) in my T60 that started posting "imminent failure" messages every day or so in XP's Event Viewer. A sample of two is hardly valid statistically speaking, but I can't help wondering if we're going to start seeing more of these. Mine happened just last week.

Lenovo replaced the drive under the 3 year on-site warranty I had purchased with the laptop, and without the need for a visit by the QualX rep that handles the service in my area. They just shipped me a fresh Hitachi drive, and Acronis True Image handled (most of) the rest.

I found out that it is actually Windows XP that is causing my load cycle count to be so high, I have no idea why. When it idles I can audibly hear the hard drive head parking and unparking and it is very annoying. There is a script for linux that fixes this error, and I have no idea how to resolve it for Windows. my best bet right now is to get a new hard drive

The sad part is that this hard drive is only 7 months old and it is about to die, hopefully within the warranty.

I'm surprised there aren't other threads about this. My hard drive should be dead by now because of all the excessive load cycles.

Interesting.. I just had my 100GB7200 replaced! Is is the parking that killing these things or?

By default in Windows and Linux (I've tried each) the OS keeps parking and unparking the hard drive. This is very very bad for the drive because each time it does this it adds another cycle and it can only last 600,000 cycles (mine's at 760,000!). This leads to the drive failing prematurely, usually within a year. ouch

it seems to affect some hard drives and the seagate 100gb 7200rpm is one of them.
