Matshita UJ-862 multi-burner not working for CD-Rs

So my new T61 seems to like to burn DVD-Rs, but not CD-Rs. I have tried burning data + audio with no luck. I have tried iTunes, Nero, Sonic.

I have the Matshita UJ-862 multi-burner.

Any ideas?

What happens when you burn a disc, are you getting an error message?

I have gotten an array of errors:
*from Nero I get something to the extent of 'illegal block size'
*from iTunes I get error 4261 or 4265 (or something close), 'unkown error'
*i dont remember the error from Sonic

either way it seems to get to about 5% of the whole process and fails. i don't think it actually writes anything during this process though.
