T61p GPU temperature

My GPU peaks at about 98 C. I'm a little worried that it may be too high and shorten the lifespan of my laptop. Any ideas on how to lower it? I've already cleaned out my fan and applied arctic silver 5 on the GPU.

I would worry about that temp. I have a 6459-CTO and as I write this, just coming off a half hour of Cradle of Rome, my CPU is at 50C per ThinkPadFanControl, running on default fan. What Power Management Scheme are you running?

When I reached 98 C GPU I had everything running at full speed. The CPU peaked at 78 C which is OK but I'm more worried about the GPU. I also have a 6459CTO.

Right now my CPU is idling at 36 C thanks to Arctic Silver 5, but GPU seems to be idling at 53 C.

I've not seen my GPU exceed 77, but I'm not an extreme gamer. My CPU is at 50 C and my GPU is idling at 46 C. There are several temperature threads on the board that might be worth reviewing. In my own experience I found that problems with Power Manager were affecting my temperatures. I am now running the "Energy Star" profile. When I noticed my temperatires rising to unfamiliar levels, I saw that I had a blank power profile. Fixing that problem involved a bit of registry editing, but once it was solved things returned to normal.

I've modded my CPU and GPU with Arctic Silver 5, undervolted the CPU, and still the GPU overheats (in my opinion). Maybe I did something wrong with the thermal grease though.

I have my T61p docked on a cooling base with a fan pointed at it when I'm gaming and it still gets up to about 90C. If I didn't have any sort of active cooling set up (beyond the fan/heatsink that are built in) it would definitely overheat while gaming.

I play WoW and raid for 4-5 hours at a time a couple of nights a week and it usually sits at about 80C while just piddling around in-game. But in a full 25-man raid encounter with AOE and lots of spell effects and stuff going on it runs extremely hot.

It is a little worrisome but I guess that's why I have an extended warranty. :)

I'm undervolting with RMClock and that seems to keep things a little cooler. When I enable RMClock, I can watch the CPU temp start to drop immediately, ultimately running about 5* C cooler than without it.

Ambient temp where I am now is about 90* F.

My GFX idles at about 55* but gets up into the 70's and sometimes 80's while gaming. Interestingly, some nVidia driver versions make it run hotter than others. Right now I'm using 175.75 from Laptopvideo2go which seems to run a bit hotter than some other versions, but the gaming performance seems better.

There is a new Lenovo driver out, finally. I wonder if I should give that a try? Somehow, though I doubt it would be as good as the LTV2go drivers seem to be.

I'm not sure how the GPU temperature is measured in laptops, but if it's similar to desktops, then 100*C is high, but not worrisome. I think the chips are rated to 130*C or higher.

In a laptop, expansion/cooling cycle damage may be somewhat more of a concern than in a desktop. I'm not sure how much the T6x roll cage helps here.

Really? I always thought the chips were rated for 100C, but anywhere close to that is dangerously high.

I seem to have alleviated this problem by applying more thermal grease so that the GPU makes full contact with the heatsink. It now peaks at 80 C :D

That's really great to hear. A simple mod makes this laptop run so much cooler under heavy load.
