I've got a brand new T61 running XP Pro SP3. Using Acronis Workstation with Universal Restore, I successfully migrated to it from my X31! It took three attempts, as Acronis could not assign the correct driver for the HDD (Stop 0x0000007b). I read a few threads here and decided to re-clone back to the original T61 image, download and unpack the sata driver from Lenovo, copy it over to usb, and then reclone the X31 image telling Acronis where to find the correct HDD driver.

Using System Update I was then able to update most other drivers. The rest required that I uninstall the X31 driver that was preventing the correct T61 driver from installing and doing a manual install. I checked Device Drivers to make sure everything was correct, used Add/Remove to remove the unecessary drivers, and everything appears to be working just as it should...except I can't get hibernation to work. Whether by closing the lid (with power manager set to hibernate in this instance) or by using Fn F4, the machine states "Preparing to Hibernate" and then stalls. I've let it run for 30 minutes and it still doesn't move.

Now, the X31 was a direct clone from my T40 (before I had Acronis Workstation with Universal Restore) as they apparently use the same or similar images. On the T40, hibernation always worked. On the X31, it never would.

I thought this would be fixed when moving to the T61, but updating bios, power manager, checking that ACPI is listed, changing the HDD to compatibility mode, etc. does not seem to have resolved the issue. I've tried three Microsoft hotfixes, two of which were apparently already superceeded by SP3 so they would not even install.

Is this due to some errant X31 driver, and if so, is the driver active if the X31 device it was used for is not present on the T61? I can't believe that I suceeded in moving from the X31 to the T61 with vastly different hardware only to be stopped in getting hibernation to work! It's ironic that I have hibernation working on a five year old T23 here without problem. Any suggestions?

If this was me (though I avoid cross-platform cloning as my experiences with it have been problematic), I would try a repair install of XP. It may be that what you need is an XP driver that would be detected and installed during the install. This is wild-assed speculation, but that's were I would start.

I did read many of the posts here about the risks of cloning with vastly different hardware configurations, but the promise of software based on HAL seemed worth the risk. It isn't like fresh installs on Thinkpads don't sometimes have their share of problems. (I've had driver issues, System Update issues, etc.)

When you refer to a repair install, how exactly would I attempt that? Is that done via Rescue and Recovery? I don't have the service partition, though I did think to create an image of the original T61 service partition in case sometime I wanted to try to install that partition, but I wasn't sure there would be way to be able to "link" it to the principal partition.

If a missing XP driver was needed, would this not display in Device Drivers?

Can you think of a reason why the X31 can't hibernate since that was NOT from different hardware? It might have the same cause that prevents it from working on the cloned T61.

No one has any idea about this hibernation issue? Why would an X31 NOT hibernate, but that image migrated to a T41 work perfectly? And now why won't hibernation work when the X31 is imaged to a T61? Surely if one can overcome the HAL issues, hibernation should be solveable. I find it hard to believe that something made it work on the T41, but not on the X31 and T61.

Surely given the number of hibernation issues that I've read about here with various Thinkpad models, there must be some way of narrowing down what the issue is.

A "repair install" is done using the XP installation disc. You need the XP CD plus the installation key. After the PC boots from the disc, you're prompted for whether you want to do a clean install or a repair install. I don't remember exactly where the prompt comes from or what it looks like, it's been a while. If you want to try it, i would do some Googling.

That's what I suspected. Which of course one would not normally have since XP is provided via the Thinkpad license and not via the standalone license. So this won't work, unless if one "builds" a custom XP install disk using the Thinkpad recovery disks, this would by chance then provide that option.
