Difference between T61 Part #6459CTO and T61 Part #6457CTO

Hi, I will probably purchase a Thinkpad for college and I can get a discount if I buy it through my university. However, I can only customize a T61 Part #6457CTO. I see that the T61's on Lenovo's website are Part #6459CTO. What is the difference between the two?

Thanks.

The 6459-CTO is a T61/P. The 6457-CTO is just a T61. The T61/P has a better discrete graphics processor. NVIDIA Quadro FX 570M (256MB Open GL) vs. one of these on a T61;

Intel GMA X3100 GM965
nVIDIA Quadro NVS 140M

The default LCD resolution is also higher on a T61/P. WXGA vs. WSXGA+ on a T61/P.

Hm, but I can customize the T61 through my university with a Quadro FX 570M. And I looked at the T61 (not T61/P) on the Lenovo site and it also displays 6459 as the part number.

and click on summary review.

No, unless there is s a special build offered there that is not available online at the Lenovo retail site. That is highly unlikely. Regardless of the model number, if you can't select an NVIDIA Quadro FX 570M, it is not a T61/P.

Sorry I should rephrase that, I can customize a 6457CTO with a Quadro FX 570M. So I don't think T61 vs T61/P is the difference between 6457CTO and 6459CTO.

I don't know if that has anything to say at all.

I've got a T61p which is a 6457-BQG, having WSXGA+, the Quadro 570m and everything else that it takes to be the very T61p I had ordered.
The system is reported and registered as T61p at Lenovo.

Still, there's only "T61" printed next to "lenovo" on the laptop itself, not "T61p". Gave me quite a shock when I received the laptop and opened the box, but everything turned out all right ;)

Maybe the type are just a revision thing, or there may be subtile differences like with my laptop housing, or one type having wirless N capability while the other doesn't.

For what it's worth, I saw T61s with Quadro 570Ms on Newegg a while back. Caught me by surprise, as I figured those were only in the -p models

For the two part numbers, I can customize it so the two are exactly the same (and top of the line). I'm just afraid that the 6457 is heavier or has shorter battery life or something.

The bases are identical. The Quadro 570M would give you shorter battery life.

None of this will be the case. As long as the built-in components are configured to be the same, go with either one. It won't matter.

Assuming you can configure both machines identically, the only difference I can see is (international) warranty. See here http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... OOK-IWS#sw to check where each one can be serviced.
