Lenono's solution to the problem WAS pushed out very quickly though. There was a software patch which slowed down the graphics unit to prevent overheating. (I don't recall if it slowed it down all the time, or based on heat, only that it was a patch for that specific problem.)

thats interesting regarding the patch you mentioned. i was really thinking long time if i should take the risk to buy a well equipped t61p but up to know i only concluded to stay with a t60p wide which i still didn`t purchased.

did you test this patch? ... may also doing a longer running stress test including gaming and gpu intense apps? ...


but however ... returning to the initial topic, lenovo may missed the point to participate as they where still too much in the process to set up their general support services in those days. i recently read an article that lenovo lost the high ranks in support, now being listed on a 5th and 6th place in comparison to former ibm`s long standing first three places in support services.

Didn't test the patch, just blindly installed and run it, as I do with most other patches. Although I usually let them ge tested by braver folks for a month or two, I don't rush to be the first to install them.

I don't run intensive gaming apps, so I'm not the best one to ask. But no matter where I put my coffee, the computer can't keep a cup of it really HOT.

Here also... it runs so cool it rarely goes beyond 40c, and that was this summer. But it's integrated Intel graphics. The NVidia really [normally] runs that much hotter? I've only dealt with a few clients running anything beyond 6xc,. Beyond that you can heat the room you are in this winter.

I do keep it clean and I probably was lucky as I believe a lot depends upon how well they installed the CPU on these. If they put too much thermal compound, if it's not spread evenly, type of compound used etceteras.... it can and does make a huge difference. This one is amazing - I expected it to run much hotter than this. Nevertheless, there must be some real heat issues with the NVidia chipset if the temps are going that high.

I found this thread while searching for a way to cool down the nVIDIA Quadro NVS 140M in my T61. I'm running driver version 195.62 / file version 6.14.11.9562 (from nVIDIA Control Panel > System Information). It runs at 67-68*C. I don't game, 3D, or CAD / Photoshop. There's mention of a 'patch' a few posts up--could someone point me to that? I searched, but came up empty handed... Alternately, is there a way to underclock the thing? Thanks for any help.

Are you sure the 140M chip was one of the ones listed with this problem?

Mine is the FX570M, totally different chip and driver.

If your chip was affected, I'd suggest whatever the current drivers are, they should all still be addressing the problem.

From what I've read elsewhere and from this post (OP and a number of others), it seems that the 140M is also affected. It certainly seems that mine is--it's never below 60*C, and I do nothing graphically 'intensive'. Do you know of any way to reduce clock speed (or anything else to cool it down)?

Nope. Applied the driver that was said to "correct" the problem by kneecapping the chip speed. Would suggest you contact Lenono and NVidia directly to ask about yours if there are no web hits with answers.
