Error 1305 installing 2008 Streets & Trips on T-60

#1 Post by almostthere » Fri Jul 18, 2008 12:06 pm

Any T-60 owners running XP having problems installing Microsoft Streets and Trips 2008 beside me? Up to date T-60 running XP Pro with XP service pack 3. Seems to install easily on Vista but not XP.

Installed Microsoft AutoEurope 2007 on T-60 with ease earlier. But can't get by 1305 error installing Microsoft 2008 Streets and Trips. Installed on my Dell 530 running Vista, Streets and Trips to see if it was a CD or software problem. Installed without problems, thus cd/disk may not be the problem and cd drive on T-60 is clean and installing all other programs without difficulty.

Message reads: "Error 1305 Error reading from file D:\Streets\MSMap\PFiles\Data\USA_CDMad. Verify that file exists and that you can access it" Could open program files in D drive but search did not return file info...assume I am doing something wrong here...not sure how to properly verify that the file exists and have no idea on how I can access file if it exists.

Anyone know if Microsoft Streets and Trips 2006 or 2007 will install on T-60 running XP without 1305 issues? Will buy and run earlier program to save time and frustration if need be. Thanks in advance.

Loading from HD does not work

#2 Post by almostthere » Sat Jul 19, 2008 6:49 am

In case you experience this problem with 2008 Streets and Trips, it seems problem also applies to 2007 version. Received from Microsoft support proceedure to resolve by loading from HD, which does not work. Believe 2006 version works well on T60 but some issues seem to exist for T60 owners.
See below:
To resolve this issue, let's try to install from the hard drive. To do this, follow these steps:

Copy all of the contents on the Streets & Trips disc to a folder on D drive.

1. Create a new folder on the hard disk (For example, D:\ST2007).

2. Insert the Streets & Trips DVD into the DVD-ROM drive. Press and hold down the

SHIFT key as you inserts the CD-ROM to prevent Setup from starting automatically.

3. Double click Computer.

4. Right click on the DVD-ROM drive and select Open.

5. Hit CTRL+A and then CTRL + C (Select ALL and then Copy) or you can Click on

Edit-->Select All, and then click on Edit-->Copy.

6. Click the Back Button.

7. Double click on the C Drive.

8. Navigate to the folder just created (For example, D:\ST2007)

9. Hit CTRL-V (Paste) or click Edit, Paste.

Once the files are copied successfully, let's try to install the program.

1. Press Window Key + R key or type Run in the Start Search box, and then type D:\ST2007 & then click Ok

2. Double click on setup file

3. Change the default location form C:\Program Files\Microsoft Streets & Trips to

D:\Program Files\Microsoft Streets & Trips

Can't load Streets and Trips to Flash Drive

#3 Post by almostthere » Sun Jul 20, 2008 9:14 am

Found suggestion at English Forums - www.gpsdiscuss.com on GpsPasSion. If you have problems with Microsoft Streets & Trips this is the forum to go to. One member solved install problem by loading Streets & Trips to flash drive.

Have two 16GB flash drives and tried to load Streets and Trips following procedure described from both of my Dell Vista computers.

In all cases could not load just one file. "Streets file" could not be loaded and believe it was same in earlier failed attempts to load to hard drive. Loading now only to fail again, but reads "10697 Days and 2 hours to go".

Problem seems to be tied to ONE OF 9 FILES...STREETS on 2008 Streets and Trips DVD that is not loadable on hard drive or flash drive...seems to be media problem and not dvd drive.

Still trying to find a version of Streets & Tours that will work on XP with ease and have suggestion of 2006. Anyone going through similar install problem?

5 Days later Microsoft responds...buy a 2nd copy of 2008 S&a

#4 Post by almostthere » Wed Jul 23, 2008 3:35 pm

First time ever had to deal with Microsoft and after 5 days with last response to 2008 S&T installation issue on T60...I got the following response...."Thank you for your reply and update on the issue.
I understand your concern as you are unable to install Streets and Trips 2008 on the third Acer computer with Windows XP operating system, but Streets and Trips 2008 installed fine on both computers with Vista operating system.
Streets and Trips 2008 could be installed on two computers and activated with the same Product key. If Streets and Trips 2008 will not be installed on the third computer as you could install and activate the program on two computers. This is be the product design. If you have to installed Streets and Trips 2008 on the third computer then you would purchase another copy of Streets and Trips 2008 with a new CD key. I sincerely apologize for the inconvenience caused."]

If you are running XP on your T60, do not even consider buying 2008 Street & Trips....read the GPS forum posts and you will see multiple issues with installation and owners returning software. I had to install on desktop to register to get Microsoft help and it was a mistake. I am now stuck with it on an Vista desktop and can get GPS readings at my home which is not what I was after. Nor do I wish to own a second copy much less my current 2008 copy.

I also tried to install software on an ACER running XP and got same result. Ended up buying 2006 Microsoft Streets & Trips as it seems to be last known working edition that works on XP. If anyone ever figures out install solution, please advise. Have asked Microsoft to call but am not holding my breath here.

This is just SO cheesy! Spend $100.00 or more for a outdated program like that and be limited to just two machines! Jeeze! Thanks again Microsoft!

Better to spend a few more dollars on a TomTom and get tons more value for the money. My TomTom has worked so well, I think it's magical!

 Your were right...I should have bought a Tom Tom or standard GPS system for my vechicle. The time I have wasted here and the frustation Microsoft has given me has cost them a customer for life!
I pretty much have given up on this program and Microsoft in general here. 4-5 days to get a response and then one that has nothing to do with my problem and shows that my email was unread and clearly not comprehended. I installed but did not reqister and removed MS&T multiple times on different computers to better understand problem and it seems clearly to be one of Microsofts changes in the program when they shifted to Vista and improved the security so that this program could not be copied or misused. Multiple posts from unhappy customers running XP who have returned this program.

Here is one taken from Amazon re MS&T 2008, " 2.0 out of 5 stars A+ for software, F- for support , June 10, 2008
By Paul Mayer "meanderingman" (Maine) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Streets & Trips program scores A+
Tech Support scores F-

I have been using Streets & Trips for several years. I am a professional person, now retired and leading a full time RV lifestyle. I change locations frequently and use Streets & Trips daily. I am mature, mild mannered, kind, thoughtful, and very patient. I am not a computer expert, but I have been using computers since the days of DOS. I use and maintain two computers and a network.

I purchased and installed Streets & Trips 2008 in October 2007. In April 2008, for no apparent reason, it quit working. It would not load. With any other program, I would suspect that a file had become corrupted; I could uninstall and reinstall the program, insert the product ID, and be up and running again in a few minutes. I uninstalled and reinstalled Streets & Trips twice; oddly, it did not ask for product ID and it still would not load. [ONE HOUR] I went online to Microsoft Help, found my problem clearly defined with advice to call tech support at [800] 936-5700 5AM to 9PM Pacific Time Monday through Friday.

I called Tech Support; it appears to be OUTSOURCED. Over the years I have had consistently poor to disastrous (computer crashes) results from outsourced support and will not knowingly buy a program with outsourced support if there is an alternative.

MICROSOFT IS NOT AN IMPOVERISHED COMPANY AND COULD WELL AFFORD 24/7 AMERICAN TECH SUPPORT.

I was assigned a case number, 1066295656, and began a tortuous journey. The task was to go to www.support.microsoft.com/ea which would access a Microsoft program called Easy Assist which would allow tech support to take control of my computer and secretively solve the problem without allowing me to know how it was done.

Following technician's instructions, I was not able to access Easy Assist. Technician frequently put me on hold, then returned to give additional instructions to disable programs running on my computer until only Microsoft programs were running. We worked this way for 2 hours on the first day, 2 hours on the second day, and 2 hours on the third day. [SIX HOURS] Technician then declared that he had exhausted all options and that he would need to refer me to a Microsoft Server tech support. I related my sad story to the clerk who answered the phone; she transferred me to the Server tech where I related the sad story again. Server tech then informed me that there was nothing wrong with my computer. THE SERVER IS DOWN - ITS JUST SOMETHING THAT HAPPENS - THERE IS NOTHING TO DO BUT WAIT.

MICROSOFT IS NOT AN IMPOVERISHED COMPANY AND COULD WELL AFFORD TO FIELD RELIABLE SERVERS AS GOOGLE DOES.

IT ALSO SEEMS TO ME THAT THE SUPPORT TECH SHOULD HAVE KNOWN THAT THE SERVER WAS DOWN BEFORE THE HOURS OF UNSUCCESSFUL REPEATED ATTEMPTS TO REACH THE SERVER.

A Microsoft representative then telephoned me to inquire whether I was satisfied with the tech support; I complained energetically. I was informed that my complaint was being given "Red Alert" status and that a Microsoft executive would call me within two business days - didn't happen.

After several days recuperation I made another call to tech support, got a new case number, 1068747744, and a new technician. This time the process proceeded as planned and the problem was solved; my phone timer revealed that the uncomplicated and successful process had still consumed 48 minutes! I was then transferred to the technician's supervisor who inquired about my level of satisfaction; I replied that I was satisfied with that particular technician but that I was extremely angry with the Microsoft policies and procedures and servers that had wasted many hours of my time. I was again informed that a Microsoft executive would call me within two business days - I did get a call from a Team Manager for Microsoft Home Products.

I was then faced with the task of enabling all the programs that had been disabled. [TWO HOURS]

So Microsoft squandered 9 HOURS of my time and caused me to suffer overwhelming stress and frustration. In my professional life I bill $100 an hour, so Microsoft owes me $900 in compensatory damages for wasting my time, and $500,000 for punitive damages to compensate for my newly acquired Tech Support Phobia which will haunt me until the end of my days. I suffer extreme anxiety by just contemplating Microsoft Tech Support.

My take on this (which may be biased) is that Microsoft responded to its paranoia about persons misusing Streets & Trips by attempting to thwart dishonest persons, utilizing a combination of the worst characteristics of the Gestapo, the KGB, the CIA, the IRS, and the Bush White House to field a complicated, clandestine, circuitous tech support process which punishes and tortures both honest and dishonest persons.

READERS MAY BE ABLE TO DISCERN THAT I AM REALLY MAD ABOUT THIS.
"

Other GPS websites and reviews have similar stories on XP install problems and unhappy XP running customers, but I did not read them until after I purchased MS&T 2008 and attempted to install without success or professional support from Microsoft. Assume if you are running Vista program is quite good but do not wish to upgrade a good running T60XP unit at this time. Shopping for a TOM TOM or related GPS system this weekend.
