If and when how is graphics card ram cooled on t61?

#1 Post by Thrakath » Mon Jul 21, 2008 8:05 am

Hi guys,

got a small question noone in the german TP Forum can answer exactly:

I want to overclock the NV140 a bit and wondered if and how its ram is cooled in the T61. Anyone there who already opened it, removed cooler or board and saw video ram? maybe it´s on the backside of the board...or just somewhere else? on the nv140 chip directly?

i am grateful for any help!
Tobi

ps: i do not want to start a discussion about the pros/cons of OC

I've torn mine apart once, and the heatsink for the cpu is shared with the gpu. I don't think the memory is cooled at all.

But did u see the Graphic-RAM beside the GPU? We (german TPForum) are not sure if it is not mounted also on the GPU beside the core!

I didn't see the ram but frankly I wasn't looking for it.

Personally, I wouldn't even consider overclocking a T61p - these laptops tend to run warm even on moderate load. I've personally worked on several T61ps that have had heat related crashes due to clogged heatsinks and the systems were not even doing CPU or graphics intensive tasks - I shudder to think what overclocking would do.

DDR chip is aside of the GPU. They are nothing to cool graphic memory chip.

My pleasure. I don't remember witch T61 is on the picture but I have already open my T61p and my T61, it looks the same. There are anything above the graphic memory chips.

Here is what I got with oc T61 and T61p :

Nice overclock,

but both are Widescreen Models!

Do you still know the O/C frequency values?

Yes, both are wide ones. I found one screen capture I made with the OC freqs : http://img520.imageshack.us/img520/8891/image1la1.png

Keeping so high frequencies is not a good idea. I just do it for fun before starting to use the laptops for real work.
