i need 8GB but not at those prices.   i put 16GB of OEM micron FB-DIMMs in my thinkstation for less than one 4GB SODIMM.

so, who's going to be the first to try these in a T61?

I have my 6459-CTO T61p working just fine on 2 of the same 4GB DIMMs TP667/4G, works great, all RAM recognized with Vista Ultimate (64 bit).

Much more elbow room for juggling multiple OSs with VMware workstation.

what brand modules did you buy?   i need 8GB as well but can't justify spending over $1000 to get there.   i'd rather buy a second thinkpad for that price.

Wondering if my T61 8892 would support 8G ?

all PM965 and GM965 chipsets should support 8GB.

I now got 2 of the Kingston modules(KTL-TP667/4G) in my T61p(6457-5GG). And I have to say, its running like a charm. 3 VMs with 2 GB each and I still got enough for the Host. Lots of fun.

How tempting. But I guess prices will only go down from here (unless some factory somewhere in Asia burns down again).

When it drops below 200 I think I'll move to 8gb and see what I can do with linux/vmware in it hehe.

It will come quickly I think. Desktop 4gb ddr2 sticks just dropped to around Cdn 50, so I'm expecting laptop ram to follow.

Wait a second here. I'm not drooling just yet. How about reframing this question so we hear some real-world differences?

For those of you who have both your 8GB and your old(!) 4GB configurations, what can you tell us about the actual performance differences? Unless you're running 20 virtual machines at a time like Keith Combs, what is the tangible difference between 4GB and 8GB?

That really depends on the apps one wants to run. 4 GBs are pretty enough for every OS (even for Vista ) itself. However, a good reason to expand the amount of system memory installed in your machine is the fact that most of the recent graphics cards have become pretty RAM hungry with the newer Vista drivers (under nVidia Turbocache or ATI Hypermemory), so under circumstances certain amount of system memory can be locked alone for the gpu (in my case it´s quite notable with 3 GB totally available and ATI Hypermemory up to 1000+ MB including dedicated memory)

I have 8gb in my t61 (not p) which is useful for some memory intensive purposes. The 4gb sodimms are still very expensive though, I'd say don't get it unless you know you need it, until the price comes down. 4gb is practically a giveaway these days by comparison.

What happened? Why are those two sticks $80 more today than at the end of October of last year.

like anything, memory prices fluctuate thanks to supply and demand.

It is weird, supplies seem to have dried up. I heard some factories shut down due to the economic slowdown. Lots of 2gb parts available but no 4gb. I had buyers remorse buying when I did, but it looks like I did fine.

It's funny, the newegg.com link above just had lowered the price to $285 last week. Now it is listed as de-activated. I'm sure there will be some suppliers, some where. We'll just have to wait and see. Phr, you did just fine.
