DVI and docking problems

I've got a T60p, latest BIOS and video drivers, clean slipstreamed install of XPSP3. The problem is that when I dock, I have a very low (but not zero) success rate for getting the display to show on the external monitor (Samsung 245t @ 1920x1200).

I've tried building a specific presentation director profile, but I can't get more than about two steps through it, as soon as I click on "test" I get this error:

"The following settings you have selected cannot be applied properly. Change the setting and try again. Display Configuration"
(This means pretty much nothing to me. ;-)

At this point, i'm up against the wall and have no real idea what else to mess with... the mouse and keyboard work just fine through the docking station, but without the external monitor working it's pretty much useless. ;-)

any ideas?

A few follow-up questions:

1. Are you using a video card in the dock, or just the docks DVI connector?
2. Does the external screen work if you do a cold boot while docked?
3. If you go to your Display Properties, do you see the second monitor, and are you able to enable it?

I once had a similar problem. After driving an external WUXGA screen for some time without problems, I started getting the same error message. In the end, I uninstalled and reinstalled Presentation Director and it worked (again).
