In deciding whether to upgrade my 1.83 Core Duo to a 2.16 Core2 processor, I am asking the difference in performance not so much the processor spreed, but the Core2 difference. It was suggested I get a 7200 RPM HD to boost performance, I can agree with that, but what about the Core2 difference. I can get the core2 T7400 for $200

Trying to avoid a new purchase and I like the sxga+ form factor.

To be able to proceed with this upgrade, you must have a Revision 3 motherboard on your T60.

Having said that, I would find it a worthy upgrade if you're intent on keeping the machine for another couple of years.

I have the rev 3 no problem. So the core2 is worth it. Should I replace HD as well?

Throw in the 7200rpm drive, and max out the RAM if you haven't already...then enjoy...

the biggest reason to switch to core2 would be a 64-bit os.

But that's not going to fly on a T60 since its chipset doesn't support 64-bit architecture regardless of CPU used...

Huh? It doesn't support more than 3gb of ram but there's other things 64-bit does.

T60(p) with Core 2 Duo T7200, T7400 and T7600 does support x64 architecture. However, no chipset in T60s could utilize more than 3 GB of RAM regardless of the amount installed.

I'm running Vista 64-bit on my T60p right now and it works just fine.

I have a T60 2007-76U with a T2500 Core Duo processor running 32-bit Vista Home Premium. I have a 7,200 RPM HDD.

I've been considering an upgrade to one of the Merom processors but I wonder if I'll ever see any noticeable improvement in performance and also worry about an increase in core temperatures.

$300+ for a new Merom is a lot of money and would like to have some feedback on just what I could expect in terms of real world response times.

I use the TP for travel/vacations to surf the Internet, eMail and to capture and edit digital images using PS Elements.

No games, no video editing, etc.

The possibility exists that I could replace the TP with a MacBook Pro within a year.

So... it loks like the HD is the best shot at a boost of performace. I keep it clean all the time of junk buildup already, have 2 2Gb chips in there already, and it sounds like the jump from 1.83 Duo to Core2 is not the primary boost factor. I can get the HD on EPP for $xxx. Sounds like a ggod option for a while until it's time for a new deal. Would you all agree???

You don't have use OEM hard drive.

You can get a Hitachi 7k200 200gb for $112 before $20 rebate.

zipzoomfly.com or newegg.com would have a better deal than EPP, especially considering the fact that you'd pay tax on an EPP order.

the new seagate momentus 7200.3 series or hitachi 7K320 series are the fastest 2.5" 7200RPM drives available.   i recommend either brand.   size is up to you.

I guess the HD is the performance boost I am looking for. Mine is 160 5400. I expect the 300/7200 will make a substantial difference

I upgraded my T2500 to a T7400, and I find that having the larger cache seems to make the OS feel a bit snappier.
