Serial ATA Hard Drive Bay Adapter

#1 Post by mdclow » Thu Jul 31, 2008 9:27 pm

I purchased a Hitachi SATA 200GB 7200 rpm hdd to use in a Serial ATA Hard Drive Bay Adapter 40Y8725. When I install the new HDD into the adapter and put it into the slim bay there is no D drive showing in My Computer.

But when I put a 120GB 5400 rpm SATA drive (with an image of my T60) into the adapater it shows up as the D drive.

Does this mean there is a problem with the new/virgin 200GB drive?

You'll need to go to the control panel area, then Administrative tools. In that window look for Computer Management. In the Computer Management window expand Disk Management under Storage.
Look for Disk 1 and it should show as unformated, right click in the unformated section and you should get an option to format it.

it's much quicker to go to start > run > diskmgmt.msc ;)

It's even faster to right click on Computer and select "manage" from the context menu and then "disk management" from the window that opens. :D

I wanted to do the same thing but am confused on a different point. Do I want the SATA "internal hard drive" or "plug-in module" variant? I don't have the adapter with me and don't know the difference. I assume the different is in the connectors but I'm not sure...

If you wish to add a second SATA harddrive you would want ThinkPad Serial ATA Hard Drive Bay Adapter which is compatible with ThinkPad R60, T60, X60, and Z60 Series notebooks.

Hope that helps

Thanks for the reply.

I have one of these already (bought it with the T61p). The question is which type of HD goes in there - "plug-in module" or "internal"? Or does it matter?

I would think "internal" because I would expect it to be the same as the primary one in the laptop, but I'm not 100% sure.

I'm not sure how big a Hard drive you are looking for, but basically what you want is this, Lenovo 250GB 7200 rpm Serial ATA Hard Drive or something like, one of these, if you wish to go outside of Lenovo

An internal SATA 2.5" 9.5mm drive.
