What is this on the left side of the laptop?

I have a T61. On the left side of the laptop, I notice that there is a big open slot with a slot cover. It is next to the USB port.

What sort of slot is this and what goes in there? It's too big to be a pcmcia. You can see the image here.

My guess is you mean the opening for the PCMCIA slot (lower one) and either the express card slot or the smart card slot (depending on your model) right above it.
