T60 random issues (reboot during dock/undock, fan)

#1 Post by thenew3 » Mon Aug 11, 2008 11:07 am

My approximately 2 year old T60 is having some strange issues lately.

1) When running on battery power, the power profile is set to adaptive cpu speed. the system is running at low cpu speed but the fan is on almost constantly. When running on AC power, the system is also set to adaptive cpu speed, but the fan is almost always off!! I would think with the additional heat created from the charging circuitry to charge the battery that the fan would run even more when on AC power.

2) When docking or undocking the machine (hot or warm) the machine will sometimes reboot itself. I know there is an issue with the early docks needing a rubber cap on some of the pins. I have those rubber caps installed. I've tested this on 5 docking stations (4 older type, 1 newer). and they all do the same thing. this is not easilly reproduceable. I can go days without a reboot then it would randomly reboot 10+ times a day when I dock/undock.

Anyone else experience these things and have a working solution? Couldn't find anything using search. thanks

Unfortunately, no real answers here, just a couple of comments:

1) Have you used a program like TPFanControl to check/set the temperature and fan speed?

2) I have experienced the same (with a T60p) but with much less frequency than you. In the past year or so it only happened 3 times and only when attaching to the advanced mini dock and when the Thinkpad was in sleep mode. The reboot would occur right when coming out of sleep mode (two times) or just shortly before the log-in screen (once) - the latter may actually represent a different, unrelated problem.

One thing that is always recommended around here is to update the BIOS to the latest version. It may or may not help in your case.

Thanks for the reply.

I do have the latest bios and all latest drivers/software.

I do notice that it happens less frequently with the standard 6 cell battery. but since I take this thing to meetings all day long, I need the 9 cell.

I've tried 3 different batteries on it, all will reboot, but the two 6 cells seem to do it less often.

I haven't loaded any programs to monitor fan speed or temperature. But the machine feels very cool. It only gets very slightly warm on the bottom, unlike my wife's Dell D620 which gets scolding hot on the bottom and you can't use it on your lap.
