hi guys,

i have a t60p revision 3 bios version 2.22.
My cpu is a t2700.
But i need a 64-bit support. Is it possible to change to nen t7700?
A friend of mine, sells the t7700 very cheap.
On eBay.de i find a t7200 and a 7400, but the item location is hong kong.
Should i change the cpu cooler against e kew one?
yesterday i changed the thermal conductance paste. After this my t2700 is very cold. Do you think it advisable for me to change the thermal conductance pad at mit fire gl card?

I don't see any reason why it would not work... technically. The problem will BIOS support, because I do not believe a T60 ever came with a 2.4Ghz Core 2 Duo CPU. Someone who has done this swap will have to verify.

T60 will not be able to use T7700. T60 is socket M and T7700 processor is socket P. While the pin count is the same, the pin arrangement is different. T7200, T7400 and T7600 are socket M processors.

You also need a version 3 system board to use 64 bit processor. Sounds like you have that in the OP.

If your goal is to use > 3GB of RAM, don't bother. T60 can only address 3GB maximum, see the sticky in this forum. If your need is to perform 64-bit calculations, then you will be fine.

I think you want to get a T7600 chip.

is it right that a t7200 should be as fast as my t7200, isn´t it.
i haven´t the 64 bit support. so i should by a t7600 or a 7400 to have a speedadvantage.
on eBay germanyyou can find only a few cpu´s. so i have to do an initial purchase , which is ver expensive. what dou you think about an external purchase?

Actually T7200 (2.0GHz) is slower than T2700 (2.33Ghz). You have to get a T7400 or T7600 to beat T2700 in speed.
BTW, be careful about purchasing on ebay. There are some dishonest sellers selling industrial samples to make good money.

I've got a T2400 (1.83ghz) cpu in my T60 (2008-CM5, WinXPPro) and started loooking for a speedier processor also. With 2GB ram and 7200rpm drive I've just abt gone as far as I can go speed enhancement-wise..

Derprof's got a T2700 cpu in his, data says its a 2ghz, 2M cache 478pin MicroPGA chip.. CrazyFrog says that any of the 7200, 7400 or 7600 chips will work but data I find says they are 4MB cache but 479-pin chips... are these indeed different sockets? Which is the correct cpu to choose then?

I find lots of T2500 & 2600 (but no 2700) processors.. but the choice btwn 2mb and 4mb cache is an easy one, if I can find the proper T7x00 chip..

I have a T7600 in a couple of T60p's and they are working nicely. The CPU packaging is the same for the T2500 and the T7600.

The fastest mobile CPU in a particular generation always remains expensive. Even today, Pentium M 765 and 780 are quite expensive compared to the next slower models. I would not expect T7600 or T7700 prices to come down much.

T60 and T60p take the same CPUs.

I believe you are confused by the CPU interface.

First of all, let's list the models of processor that can be used in both T60 and T60p:

Core Duo: T2400 T2500 T2600 T2700
Core 2 Duo: T5600 T7200 T7400 T7600

The top model that can be used in T60 series is T7600 (2.33GHz). There are a few others, but they are less popular and less powerful. So I am not going to list them here.

Now let's talk about CPU interface. Intel designed two CPU interfaces for all of the upper processors: Micro-FCBGA and Micro-FCPGA.

Micro-FCBGA, i.e. Flip Chip Ball Grid Array, is Intel's BGA mounting method for mobile processors. It has 479 ball pin contacts.

Micro-FCPGA, i.e. Flip-chip pin grid array, also called Socket M, has 478 pin contacts!

All T60/T60p use Core Duo/Core 2 Duo with Micro-FCPGA interface. So when we are talking about T7600 for T60/T60p, we refer to T7600 with Micro-FCPGA.

There are of course T7200, T7400, T7600 etc. which come with Micro-FCBGA interface. If you get a processor with Micro-FCBGA interface, you are throwing money down the drain.

Finally, don't think of T7100 T7300 T7500 T7700 T8100 T8300 etc. These are Socket P processor for T61/T61p.

Thanks CF... 'knew I needed the -PGA chip... between the 500 more mhz speed and extra 2MB cache of a 7600, 'should make this -60 hyperventilate, or at least breathe easier crunching video..

my t60p is out of warranty, it is an american / canidian vesion a 2007-8du is it possible to buy a warranty upgrade?

There is always a risk of damage when you take apart a machine. If you follow the directions, a Thinkpad CPU upgrade is not much more complicated than a desktop CPU upgrade. If you have never upgraded a CPU or you cannot afford the risk of killing your machine - take it to a professional.

my problem isn´t the exchange of the cpu, i think about killing my board with the t7600, because my board wasn´t produced for the cpu.

There is not a problem with compatibility with your board and the T7600. Your board will run perfectly with the T7600.
