Take a look at the front, left side and right side views of a T61 with 14.1-inch standard screen.

Technically, it is possible to have a hybrid T60p with 8GB RAM, 256(128?)MB nVIDIA Quadro FX 570M and more importantly a FlexView LCD.

Still shopping....just the t60p w/flex that I find on eBay are too pricey.

I found a decent T61 on Lenovo's factory outlet...

Yep, you're absolutely correct and it's already been done by a forum member here...T61p mobo in a T60p frame. The only thing which would stop me from doing it if I still had a T60p would be nVidia card that I'm really not keen on...

This is a very sound piece of advice. I've owned several of these machines and they are nice units that can sometimes be sourced cheap on fleabay, with all the usual risks involved.

Then you're not looking properly, or setting up the correct filters...agreed, it's not like there's 50 of these on offer, but they can be sourced.

FYI, here in the Marketplace they change hands for way less than that, and forum is usually more expensive than eBay because of the comfort zone and safety net it provides...

Here is a T60p with UXGA IPS screen on ebay UK.

Unfortunately, it seems the screen has two blue pressure marks right above the Windows logo, though the seller was reluctant to admit (It much be touched by an alien who can leave blue finger prints on screen). Besides, the original 100GB 7200rpm seems to be replaced with a 120GB 5400rpm one. Otherwise, it is a good machine.

Yeah, research on the boards here..seems the FlexView only comes 15". I really do like the 14" chassis...so it was a close call.

Side by side with my old T42...she's much thinner, and lighter.

I found the model I listed above on fleabay..won the auction for 670 dollars, US. Pretty good price I think.

Laptop arrived today, appearance is like it's brand spanking new, even smells new.
Pleasant surprise.

Only thing I don't like is the battery sticks out in the back.

Very pleased with it so far. Sitting here now wiping the hard drive clean, installing the dreaded Vista (must learn Vista)...will dual boot with PCLinux or Ubuntu, and possibly triple boot with Server 2008.

I don't like the battery sticking out the back either. I'm thinking about buying a 6 cell battery. I don't think they stick out and I really don't use the battery much. I have a DC adapter and along with the AC adapter I can usually find a power source.

Nice price for a like new laptop. I was surprised at how fast the keys get shinny.

Would a 32 or 64 bit version of XP be an option for your system?

It would be. Came with the deployed Lenovo version of XPp. But I have to start getting familiar with Vista....like it or not. So I wiped the drive, clean install of Vista 32 Ultimate. I toyed with putting on Vista 64 (MSDN subscription)...but the slight chance of some lack of driver support of it..on top of, the T60s RAM limitations..I had no reason to go 64.

Just a fyi re driver support. There are x64 versions of most drivers. I haven't found that to be a problem. The problem I have found is with Vista x64's insistence on "signed" drivers. This a real pain in the butt and there is no good reason for it, imo. Fortunately, there is a simple work around if you want to use unsigned drivers on Vista x64 and that is a freeware program called ReadyDriverPlus which makes the machine automatically boot into a mode that disables the signed driver requirement. So with that I'm able to run programs like RMClock which don't have a signed driver on Vx64.

Finally ordered RAM in for the T60p 2007 87U I received a few weeks ago. Machine has been running wonderfully. It arrived with 2 gigs (pair of 1 gigers)...I ordered a pair of Crucial 2 gig sticks.

Aware of the T60p limited 3 gigs to the OS, and aware of 32 bit Vista.

Upon bootup, Vista showed 4 gigs in System properties. A full 4.00GB.

Task Manager showing 3069 avail to the OS. But I wasn't expecting Vista system properties to show 4. Does some IBM driver I install tweak that?

Vista SP1 reports the installed memory on the system properties page. Task manager's performance tab reports the usable memory available to Windows. Both are right.

Microsoft made this change in SP1 because many people complained because their 32-bit windows don't show 4 gigs.

Ahh...didn't know Veeesta SP1 was supposed to do that. Although, on one of my homebuilt rigs on a Gibabyte 965 motherboard, it shows the expected 3.2something gigs. (also has a pair of 2 gig chips). I'll have to try to take note as I SP1 some computers over time.
