question about T6X 4:3 vs widescreen

#1 Post by postdiction » Mon Aug 18, 2008 11:39 am

hi,
So I believe that the the T6x 14inch models come in both 4:3 and widscreen versions?

And I was wondering how much wider is the widescreen version vs the 4:3 model?

I own a t23 14inch and this is the perfect size and laptop for me. I do not want a wider laptop shell but wouldn't mind a widescreen lcd in similar physical dimensions.

thanks

If you like the 4:3 form factor get a T61 4:3 too. I think the widescreen version is wider than the 4:3. If you have become accostumed to a certain resolution, i.e. SXGA+ and get a 14.1 WS you will lose vertical resolution (1400x1050 vs either 1200x800 or (1440x900) SXGA+ vs WXGA or WXGA+ respectively.

That's why I ordered a T61 SXGA+ as a replacement for my T42p.
I don't need those fancy WS unless I would be using a real desktop replacement machine that would serve as a worsktation with WUXGA resolution.

There has been some debate about the quality on the T61 4:3 screens, I can't speak for myself because I don't have yet my T61.
If you're concerned about screen contrast, brightness you should consider a T500 which according to Notebook Review it has a 300:1 contrast ratio and is very bright. However those only come in widescreen, bye bye 4:3 :?

I have a T61p with a 4:3 screen, and I ordered it very specifically not to get wide-screen (4:3 is better for me, and I make no assertion about anyone else).

The screen is adequately bright, but it seems to me to be somewhat washed out (blues on white are not as crisp as on my T41 with 1024x768). I still find the display to be quite useable.

It may also be a Vista problem (I have so many of those that the T61p is not yet in production). ... JDH

Good news. Apparently tomorrow my T61 arrives!!

Hopefully I would post a video and some pics comparison against my T42p if I still got it home.

mine is 4:3 at 1400x1050 .. and loving it.

about the laptop screen, just turn the blue down to like 43% (from 50) and you'll be set.

well, I have to say that I did buy a 20" external monitor with same 1400x1050 resolution though .. was kinda hard to find but works awesome :)

T60/T61 used to come in 4:3 and 16:10 variants (T60 had 4:3 and 16:10 in both 14" and 15" versions, but the T61 4:3 only came in 14"; all 15" T61s are 16:10 widescreen), but the T61 4:3 has been officially out of production for some months now.

The only way to get a 14" 4:3 T61 these days is either used, or old-stock through a reseller that happens to have some left (very doubtful), or from the Lenovo Outlet where they pop up from time to time (in both new and refurbished form).

In general, widescreen versions of notebooks that have the same diagonal screen measurement are wider but shorter; so the 14" WS is wider than the 14" standard, but the 14" WS is also shorter, and the same goes for the 15" standard vs. 15" WS. This only stands to reason since we are measuring the screens on the diagonal.

From the comparison pictures that I've seen, though, the 15" WS and the 14" standard are actually the same height with their displays opened up and put side-by-side with each other, which would seem to indicate that 14" standard SXGA+ and 15" WS WSXGA+ panels have the same pixel densities and that the 15" one simply was "extended" side-to-side in order to get the extra horizontal resolution (1400x1050 vs. 1680x1050).

15" standard T60s are the tallest with their displays opened of all four variants, but are narrower (perhaps even narrower than the 14" wide? I'll have to look up measurements; EDIT: I just looked it up: 14" WS T61 is actually wider than 15" T60 by 1mm! 335mm vs. 334mm).

The 15.4" wide is ever so slightly shorter than the 14.1" standard screen, so the pixel density is slightly higher on WSXGA+ 15.4" than on SXGA+ 14.1". But marginally so.

Oh, and for the reference - there was never a 14" wide T60. The equivalent to that is the Z61t.

Yes, you are right; I had just realized my mistake and was coming back to correct it. :P Thanks!
