New T61p - sticker says Vista Basic - spec says Vista Ult ?

I've just unpacked a new T61P and the sticker says 'Vista Basic' but the spec (http://tinyurl.com/6z3ogj) says Vista Ultimate.

Is this normal or have I been sent the wrong machine ? I don't want to do any more with the machine before I figure out whether I need to send it back.

You'd have to check with Lenovo. On the packing slip, and on your order confirmation, the OS should be specified.

It is possible a spec changed, does the sticker under the machine and on the box say 6459A12 for the machine type?

hellosailor - thanks for your help. Your reply made me look for the 'real' sticker under the machine ('Proof of licence') and it does indeed say Vista Ultimate OEM.

The sticker I was referring to is stuck just in front of the keyboard and for some reason says 'Vista Basic' (one of those stickers that are about the size of a thumbnail). Don't know why the discrepancy but I'm confident it's Vista Ultimate now.

Glad it was that simple!

Be very careful about what you install on the computer. I finally had to rebrick and then monitor each app I installed, to keep a stable machine. Lots of things that worked in NT5 or NT5.1 seem to break Vista, often causing no obvious problems but then, you can't log off, shut down, or restart to a blank desktop.

I don't think Bush realized that "Trust but verify" was something Chairman Mao said firster...but it certainly applies with Vista. Sadly.

I've had absolutely zero problems with Vista and I throw a lot at it!

BTW my t61p also has a Vista Basic sticker with Ultimate installed as do all my desktops with Business installed.

Scott, on the one hand it is my fault for throwing some older software at Vista, which violates the rule of "if it ain't logo certified, don't use it." But anything I've tried to install, has been running flawlessly in NT5 or NT5.1, so it should be at least "NT clean" enough to run on any newer NT system.

On the other hand, NT is supposed to be a juggernaut that keeps on running, trammeling over non-compliant apps and spitting out their bones--not getting crashed by them!

Heck, all I had to do was install GoogleEarth (4.3, the current product last I checked) and I couldn't log off to suspend. Obviously, SOME users can install that. But something (a Lenovo driver or update level? or something in Ultimate?) here wouldn't let that happen. And I've been able to create similar failure with a long list of apps, I've taken to documenting everything and installing only one or two apps per week in order to make sure the boots & restarts aren't affected.

As a long-time NT advocate, I've never been so disappointed by a release of NT. It's simply FRAGILE. Whether any one user breaks it or not--there are apparently ay number of ways to break it, and those simply aren't supposed to exist.

Sounds like it was doing exactly what you said it should: keep on running.
