Dual layer recording on T60 (UJ842) vs T61 (UJ862)

I've been trying to burn to DVD+R DL discs on my T60p. The fall out rate of the UJ842 is unacceptable (3 of 4 failures). When I use the UJ862 drive from my work system the fallout rate is about 1 in 10. [Still not great, since CD and regular 4.7GB DVDs never fail].

Has anyone experienced this? At first I thought it was the discs. I started with Memorex and took them back for (I think TDK, they're home and I'm not) and that is when I found the difference between the drives.

I had another UJ842 sent and it has the same failure rate. I tried to get IBM (who handles Lenovo service) to send me a UJ862 since it works, but they won't do it... So they sent me another UJ842 but I'm not holding my breath that it will fix anything.

I did go and buy a external Sony USB2 drive to try and it coastered discs too...

Does anyone have sage words?

have you tried burning at a lower speed?

i've got a new 842 and haven't tried dual layer burns yet, but i have a short stack of verbatim 2.4x dvd+rl dl disks. i'll try one now and report back shortly.

Yes, the 842 is a 2.4x and I dropped it to 2.0x and still fails.

I have had excellent success with the Hitachi-LG GSA-U10N which is FRU 39T2829. These are supplied on T61's.

Here are some specs:

GSA-U10N speed:

Write:
8X DVD+R,DVD-R
4X DVD+RW,DVD-RW
2.4X DVD+DL, DVD-DL
24X CD-R, 16X CD-RW

Read:
24X CD-ROM,8X DVD-ROM
Can read DVD-RAM

I you want to try one let me know.

Like I said the UJ862 works too, but IBM/Lenovo won't give a part from a T61 to put on a T60. Sigh...

dl data disk (~7.5gb) burned fine using recordnow at 2.4x with my 842. it's not fast, but it worked.

That's the one I have. Have you ever tried burning DVD+R DL? What did you use?

I tried to get IBM/Lenovo to send me a UJ862 instead of a UJ842 but the won't cross over. They sent me another UJ842 that I got on Friday, but I'm in Vegas (picking up my Shelby with a new Supercharger) so won't get to try it until next week.

I think I'll experiment with the external Sony drive (again, it's on sale at Frys for $80 which is $40 off the standard price) with Sony media. My current success rate using TDK media on the UJ862 is about 80%. I never touch the drive or system while it is burning either, so it's not underruns causing the problems.

Is there a difference in the burning software? Should I get Nero and bag the Sonic stuff that is included? I've never had a problems with Sonic and have grown used to the interface.

a blown shelby sounds a lot more fun than burning dl dvds! 8)

to keep it on-topic, my test above was successful using the included sonic software.
